Some might have mistaken it for misplaced \u00a0ego\u00a0 or even \u00a0arrogance\u00a0. This sentiment came from a player ranked beyond \u00a0360th place\u00a0 in the WTA<\/a> rankings. \u201cI know that I have the level, at least in practice, against all the girls here,\u201d explained Lo\u00efs Boisson after qualifying for the third round<\/a> at Roland-Garros. \u201cThe challenge is implementing what I can do in practice during matches. So far, it\u2019s working well, and I hope it continues.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it has continued. Victorious in her 100% French duel against Elsa Jacquemot, the player from Dijon is set to face American Jessica Pegula, World No. 3, this Monday on the Philippe-Chatrier court. Not bad for a wildcard player competing in her first Grand Slam tournament<\/a>. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s not a surprise,\u201d asserts Julie Pecastaing, captain of the TC Nice Giordan team where Lo\u00efs Boisson plays. \u201cIt\u2019s surprising due to her ranking, which was affected by her injury in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRoutines\u201d to Feel Physically Good<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s take a step back. Last year, just before the start of the French Open, Boisson, ranked around \u00a0150th\u00a0, was on fire, boasting an exceptional record of *twenty-three wins to one loss* on clay. This earned her an invitation to Roland-Garros and an opportunity to experience the Parisian red clay. But then came the \u00a0ACL injury\u00a0, shattering her dreams and relegating her to the struggle of recovery.<\/p>\n

Lo\u00efs Boisson (22 years old) has a complicated relationship with injuries, as her ascent in the sport was hampered by several setbacks in \u00a02021 and 2022\u00a0. This forced her to focus heavily on her \u00a0physical fitness\u00a0, as she explained last year<\/a>: \u201cFor a year, I did nothing but physical training, which has led to significant progress. I have the necessary routines to feel good physically and avoid \u00a0silly injuries\u00a0.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this did not stop her from tearing her ACL in her left knee in May \u00a02024\u00a0. However, resilient as ever, Lo\u00efs came back \u00a0stronger\u00a0. \u201cWhat surprised me the most was seeing how quickly she returned after her injury,\u201d says Diane Parry. \u201cIt\u2019s never easy. It\u2019s a significant injury, and recovery can take time. I quickly saw her performing at a very high level physically.\u201d<\/p>\n

Same Level of Play as Before the Injury<\/h2>\n

After a long injury layoff, this is often the prevailing question: would Boisson retain her skill level? Everyone was convinced she would maintain her \u00a0tennis prowess\u00a0. \u201cShe returned to competition a few months ago, and to have her current physical level is very impressive,\u201d adds Julie Pecastaing. \u201cHer game before the injury was top-notch, and I find it still is.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the realm of \u00a0French women’s tennis\u00a0, the physicality of the Dijon player is noteworthy since the retirement of Am\u00e9lie Mauresmo. Boisson has an impressive upper body strength and athleticism below, reminiscent of Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova<\/a>. This physique allows her to execute a game based on \u00a0power\u00a0.<\/p>\n

\u201cI trained in the south before kicking off the clay season with her,\u201d Diane Parry elaborates. \u201cWhen facing her, you can feel the quality of shots she possesses. It\u2019s rare for female players to generate that much topspin and have such quality in their shots.\u201d \u201cShe plays exceptionally well and has incredible hitting power,\u201d notes the captain of TC Nice Giordan. \u201cShe has great footwork and is incredibly complete. I believe her ranking does not reflect her true playing level.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Pain, But No Worries<\/h2>\n

Julie Pecastaing believes that her prot\u00e9g\u00e9 can swiftly break into the top \u00a050\u00a0. For now, while awaiting her potential quarterfinal showdown in Roland-Garros<\/a>, Lo\u00efs Boisson\u2019s ranking might return to \u00a0170th\u00a0 in the WTA, nearly the same standing as last year. Here’s hoping injuries leave her alone for good. At the end of the first set in the third round, there were concerns when she complained about her left knee, the very same knee that had undergone surgery a year earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just have a small pain in my knee, but I know how to handle it,\u201d reassured the Dijon player. \u201cIt took some time to subside during the match, but ultimately, it passed. It\u2019s a pain I\u2019m familiar with, and I know how to manage it. There won\u2019t be any special examinations before the next round.\u201d The only examination that counts now is the one against Jessica Pegula, and it promises to be quite the challenge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
