In a significant move aimed at enhancing \u00a0healthcare access\u00a0 for cancer patients, Turkey’s President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan has initiated measures for the \u00a0domestic production\u00a0 of “smart drugs.” Currently, these crucial medications are not covered by Turkey\u2019s Social Security Institution (SGK), leading to \u00a0financial burdens\u00a0 for many patients.<\/p>\n

In response to these challenges, Erdo\u011fan has directed all relevant ministries to take \u00a0swift and effective\u00a0 action in this area, highlighting the urgency of the situation.<\/p>\n

According to the pro-government Turkey Gazette,<\/b> the pressing issue of access to smart drugs has been communicated directly to Erdo\u011fan. The high costs associated with these medications are among the top concerns reported by citizens, impacting their ability to receive effective treatment.<\/p>\n

THE COST OF CANCER TREATMENT: DRUG PRICES SOAR<\/h2>\n

The current costs for these medications, acquired through importation, vary widely depending on the dosage and duration of treatment.<\/b> Prices can start from \u00a0100,000 TL\u00a0 and may escalate to more than \u00a02 million TL\u00a0 in certain cases. For instance, a \u00a012-cycle treatment\u00a0 could cost patients approximately \u00a02.2 million TL\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Due to the absence of SGK coverage for these medications, many patients find themselves resorting to \u00a0legal action\u00a0 to seek assistance and coverage for their treatment costs, further exacerbating their plight.<\/p>\n

URGENT INSTRUCTIONS ISSUED TO MINISTERS<\/h2>\n

In light of the ongoing struggles faced by cancer patients, President Erdo\u011fan stated, \u201cIt seems that we will have to produce our own \u00a0smart drugs\u00a0. If we can successfully develop TOGG, IHA, S\u0130HA, and KAAN, then we can also produce our own smart medicines. Let\u2019s act quickly in this regard. Let\u2019s start working on it by providing all necessary resources and R&D support. Additionally, we must take steps to address the current grievances as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his directive, Erdo\u011fan tasked Justice Minister Y\u0131lmaz Tun\u00e7 and Labor and Social Security Minister Vedat I\u015f\u0131khan with urgent actions to eliminate existing grievances.<\/b> Furthermore, he called for immediate collaboration among the related ministries to jumpstart the process of local smart drug production.<\/p>\n
