The music will be performed at 9:30 PM by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from the Museum of Applied Arts, explains Josef Aschbacher, the director general of the European Space Agency (ESA), behind the project, to Agence France-Presse.

The concert, streamed online, will also be broadcast live at a public screening in Bryant Park, Manhattan, as well as on the banks of the Danube canal in the Austrian capital. “The sound is digitized” and “sent to the large 35-meter parabolic antenna of the Cebreros station in Spain”, from where “it is transmitted as electromagnetic waves”, details the astronomer, who is Austrian himself. This performance, for once, is not for scientific purposes but purely artistic, also celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of ESA, which is based in Paris.

The idea originated at the Vienna Tourist Board to honor the king of the waltz, born on October 25, 1825, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The 13,743 notes of The Blue Danube accompanied the journey through the stars in Stanley Kubrick’s film of the same name released in 1968, recalls its director Norbert Kettner, for whom it has become the “true unofficial anthem of the universe.”

Speed Near Light

Sung around the world, this soundtrack is also scheduled “during various docking maneuvers of the International Space Station”. “It’s the typical sound of space”, as it has a hint of weightlessness in its 3/4 time signature, reveals Jan Nast, the head of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. “We have a particular technique: the two is played slightly earlier, the three a bit later.”

This airy style, typical of Strauss II, makes the notes soar and gives the scores a carefree party atmosphere and a sense of floating. A language “that touches so many people” and has “the universal power to convey hope and joy,” excitedly insists the musician who has programmed the concert for an entire hour.

No mistakes are allowed: once transmitted, the signal will leave without a chance of return at a speed near that of light and will reach Voyager 1, currently the most distant spacecraft from Earth, in twenty-three hours and three minutes. Afterward, it will continue its interstellar journey into unknown depths and is set to reach the nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, in four years.

The Viennese waltz joins the musical collection sent by NASA in 1977 to Voyager 1 and its twin Voyager 2. Mozart’s The Magic Flute, also Austrian, was included among the 27 tracks deemed most significant in human history and featured on Voyager’s Golden Record. However, Strauss II’s “hit” was absent. This gap is now filled by the world music capital.

General News – 2

A statue of Austrian composer Johann Strauss II, in Vienna, December 2020.
