Photo: Skjermdump / Nomioslo.no In recent days, they have received massive criticism. Both to make money from women’s insecurities related to their own appearance and to connect beauty treatments to women’s health. Feminist washing is a term that has been launched. – This beauty salon has nothing to do with health, says Siri Vangen. She is a senior physician and head of the National Center for Women’s Health Research. Here you have the answer to what she and several of Norway’s experts on women’s health think we actually need in the field – both in terms of research and treatments. Preeclampsia Although there has been some research into preeclampsia, we do not know what causes this potentially fatal disease. Tilde Broch Østborg is senior physician at the Women’s Clinic at Stavanger University Hospital. She says it is not a lack of focus on women’s health in the media and society in general – but a lack of money for research. It is not profitable enough for the pharmaceutical industry to research pregnancy, childbirth and maternity, Østborg points out: – We have large gaps in knowledge when it comes to, for example, preeclampsia. The only way forward is to do research. Approximately 10–12 per cent of Norwegian women are affected by preeclampsia. – And it will probably increase, because women are getting older when they have their first child, says Østborg. PMS and PMDD – Why do some people feel suicidal during parts of their cycle? Why don’t they work in a work and family context when things are at their worst? asks Kristin Offerdal. She has a doctorate and is a gynecologist specialist with many years behind her as a senior physician at St. Olav’s hospital. She now runs a public gynecology clinic in Trondheim, which, among other things, specializes in the investigation of cervical cancer and the treatment of hormonal disorders. She has met many of the women with severe psychological problems in the period before menstruation. – We try to refer some women to talk therapy, and put some on birth control pills so that the hormones don’t fluctuate so much. Some have to switch to anti-depressants. We know too little about why some people feel this way, says Offerdal. Early menopause – Many people are shocked when they are told at the age of 30 that their ovaries no longer work and that they cannot have children without help, says Offerdal. She says there is a lack of knowledge about why some people experience hormonal failure at a young age – also known as early menopause. And when you don’t know why, it is often difficult to know how it can be prevented. One of the things the experts do know, however, is that there is a hereditary component. – This is why we always say that women who have needed help to get pregnant due to poor ovarian capacity must pass this on to their daughters, says gynecologist specialist Offerdal. Of course, this does not apply to those who have used an egg donor. Endometriosis Today we have briefly summarized three ways to treat this often very painful disorder: birth control pills, a form of chemical castration or, in some cases, extensive surgery. Senior doctor Tilde Broch Østborg is happy that we actually have these treatment options, but: – I am curious whether in the future we will look back on this era as a time when we engaged in very invasive treatment for a condition that can actually be treated effectively with less consequences for the patients. We need breakthroughs in research to understand the mechanisms and find treatment. Tilde Broch Østborg is a senior physician and specialist in obstetrics and women’s diseases at Stavanger University Hospital. Photo: Josef Benoni Ness Tveit / news Musculoskeletal diseases This is an important reason for sick leave. And many women experience ailments such as osteoporosis. – Well over 50 per cent of women over 50 have osteoporosis. They have an increased risk of breaking, and if you break first, you can be set back a lot. There is preventive treatment for this, but it is too poorly implemented in the system, says Siri Vangen, senior physician at the National Center for Women’s Health Research. Heart diseases Vangen goes on to say that it is the young and older women we know the least about. Women live around a third of their lives after menopause, and there is little research on this. For example, it was long believed that heart disease was something women did not have. But that is completely wrong. – It is the most important cause of death in women. But it comes later in women and has a different form than in men. Too little is known about that, says Vangen. Maternity and maternity services Professor and senior physician Heidi Tiller believes that far too little emphasis is placed on prevention in the healthcare system. This also applies to maternity and maternity services. – The maternity crisis is completely real. That’s where the unskilled are put in during the summer because the few midwives you have have to take care of the birth. We know that there is a clear connection with an increased incidence of postpartum depression and breastfeeding problems. Senior doctor Heidi Tiller at the University Hospital of Northern Norway is part of a public committee which will, among other things, look at women’s health, and health from a gender perspective. Photo: Veronica Turnage / news Tiller believes that the funding of maternity services means that hospitals can easily cut back there. – If there is a caesarean section, or the mother stays in bed for so long after giving birth that she bleeds two litres, we get a lot of money. But if we invest in prevention and get a high-risk pregnant woman through a normal delivery, we get no money. Then we will be punished for it.

ttn-69

Just before the weekend, the three Norwegian celebrities Synnøve Skarbø, Vanessa Rudjord and Pia Tjelta announced that they are opening “Norway’s leading clinic for aesthetic medicine”.
