Franziska Brantner, co-chair of the Green Party, has accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) of failing to implement promised \u00a0sanctions\u00a0 against \u00a0Russia\u00a0. \u201cNothing is worse in foreign and security policy than unfulfilled promises or empty threats,\u201d Brantner stated in an interview with Spiegel<\/a>. \u201cThey only lead to the other side employing even more \u00a0violence\u00a0. Merz is obliged to deliver here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brantner further criticized Merz for distancing himself from his previous demands during the opposition regarding the delivery of \u00a0Taurus cruise missiles\u00a0 to \u00a0Ukraine\u00a0. \u201cMerz had been calling for weeks and months for this weapon to be handed over to Ukraine. Now he’s strangely hesitant on this issue,\u201d Brantner remarked. \u201cThis seems to be a classic Merz situation: full promises and then just hot air.\u201d She warned that this could lead to \u00a0disappointment\u00a0 among the citizens domestically and is extremely dangerous in the context of foreign and security policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Brantner Calls for Sanctions Against Israeli Ministers<\/h2>\n

In addition, Brantner demanded consequences stemming from Merz’s criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. \u201cThe Union must now prove through actions that their concern for \u00a0international law\u00a0 carries consequences,\u201d she insisted. There should be \u201cno German weapons deployed in Gaza in violation of international law.\u201d \u201cThus, we need an \u00a0export ban\u00a0 for this,\u201d she emphasized.<\/p>\n

Brantner also called for a more decisive approach against \u00a0settlement policies\u00a0 and settler violence, viewing these as significant obstacles in achieving a peace and reconciliation process. She proposed stronger sanctions against individuals who either perpetrate or order \u00a0violent crimes\u00a0 against the Palestinian population in the \u00a0West Bank\u00a0.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This could also apply to ultra-right ministers of finance and internal security, Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir. \u201cFor a two-state solution to ever have a chance, those in the Israeli government who propagate and execute a policy of \u00a0annexation\u00a0 and \u00a0expulsion\u00a0 in Gaza and the West Bank must face consequences,\u201d stated Brantner.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Merz had escalated his tone towards Israel. He argued that the actions of the Israeli army can no longer be justified as a fight against \u00a0Hamas\u00a0 terrorism. Israel had intensified its military offensive in Gaza this month, claiming the objective is the annihilation of Hamas, which currently controls the coastal territory.<\/p>\n

In Israel, Smotrich and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Thursday the establishment of \u00a022 new settlements\u00a0 in the occupied \u00a0West Bank\u00a0, which are illegal under international law.
