Session before the invasion of Ukraine 7,554 of the approximately 11,000 who will go into initial service this year, were in session before 24 February 2022, the date when Russia invaded Ukraine. This is shown by figures from the Norwegian Armed Forces’ personnel and conscription centre. Kristian Hafell’s mother has mixed feelings. – I feel it in my gut that it is something else to have to go to the military when there is not as much peace around us as we are used to it being, says Irene Hafell. Recently, the family has had many conversations about the military. She chooses to think about the positive. STOMACH FEELING: Irene Hafell knows well in her gut that her son will go out to the Armed Forces when there is unrest in Europe. I think it could be a good experience for him. Saumfarte Forsvaret’s website Somewhere in northern Norway, Maren Wolden Alme is already well underway with her first service as a guard and security soldier in the Air Force. The 20-year-old remembers well what she felt when the war in Ukraine broke out, shortly before she herself was due to leave. – I was inside a lot and looked at what was written on the pages of the Armed Forces. In a way, it became something else. She knew well what the military entailed, but it nevertheless became a greater seriousness when the war came so close. She wondered if the first service would be different now that there was war in Europe, and admits that she was a little scared at the very beginning. GOT ANSWERS: Maren got answers to what she wondered about when she entered the first service. Photo: Privat / Privat Greater seriousness and greater motivation Even though she knew full well it was not possible, the thought of retiring came. But she quickly found her underlying motivation. – If everyone were to think like that, then there won’t be any good defense in Norway. Father sat at home with serious thoughts. – There were very mixed feelings about Putin invading Ukraine right before she was due to leave. And one could not avoid thinking that it could become serious for Norway as well, says Ola Alme. Once inside the service, the daughter is very happy. – I think we benefit from this. We are tested on many levels, both socially, physically and psychologically. We get friendships that you can’t get otherwise and learn an incredible amount both about ourselves and about how Norway works, says Maren Wolden Alme. – The job is exactly the same. The armed forces notice that relatives have a greater need for information. On the border with Russia, company commander in Jarfjordkompaniet Torstein Ryen Løver welcomes the young people who will be serving near Russia. He finds that the soldiers are curious. – The job is exactly the same and is carried out in the same way as before February. The biggest difference is for the relatives who stay at home, who may not know as much and wonder a lot more than their sons and daughters do. – We have noticed a much greater need for information from those back home, says company commander Torstein Ryen Løver in Garrison Sør-Varanger.
