– We have come to the conclusion that we will use much more of PST’s expertise directly in the police districts, so that youth politicians and local politicians come into direct contact with the expertise we have, so that we can help prevent, says section leader in PST, Olav Rognlid. He is responsible for the protection of government officials in PST. This week he met with the Norwegian Police Directorate to discuss how the police should handle the problem. But when the consequences come to light and people like Tarjei withdraw, we must at least do more towards politicians, local politicians and youth politicians, says Rognlid in PST. Not affected by the criminal law The challenge is that many of the statements are unpleasant, but below the threshold for the criminal law, he says. – The problem becomes when you get the enormous scale against politicians that means they can’t stand it any longer. The big challenge is that we might end up with a weakened democracy in the future, because we don’t get recruitment into politics. And then we have to do something, says Rognlid in PST. He says PST and the police cannot be an opinion police that targets those who express themselves directly, unless there are people who cross the threshold for the criminal law. Will give security advice – The important thing now is to be able to contribute information about the threat picture and security advice to the politicians involved. And it will be a big effort for us going forward, says Rognlid. Hateful comments, harassment and, in the worst case, death threats have almost become commonplace for many politicians – and for their families. This is revealed in the Norwegian Police Academy’s report “Harassment and threats against politicians” which was presented earlier this year. The report was created on behalf of PST. – We are seeing an increase in the extent of incitement and harassment, as the latest report to Tore Bj\u00f8rgo also shows. Photo: Rikardo photo Philosopher Einar \u00d8verenget has written the book “The Intolerance of Intolerance”, with the subtitle “When social media threaten freedom”. He believes the debate becomes much cruder, and it becomes more difficult to distinguish between case and person when we do not meet the people and see the whole person. – The tendency is for personal attacks to take over for factual disagreement. And then that threatens freedom. People withdraw. Then they don’t get to express themselves. And it is a threat to freedom because the arena becomes very unpleasant to be in, because of the personal attacks.
