The Reimagining of “The Lion King”: Marina Toybina’s Costume Design Journey<\/h2>\n

Costume designer \u00a0Marina Toybina\u00a0 has accomplished one of the most significant feats of her career \u2014 crafting costumes for \u00a0Disney\u2019s \u201cThe Lion King\u201d\u00a0 30th anniversary celebration at the \u00a0Hollywood Bowl\u00a0. This live concert was recorded in May 2024 and is currently available for streaming on Disney+.<\/p>\n

When Toybina welcomed \u00a0Variety\u00a0 into her \u00a0Glendale\u00a0 studio just a week before the event, the atmosphere was surprisingly tranquil. Surrounded by animal prints and a myriad of fabrics, her team of cutters and assistants was engrossed in meticulously crafting costumes. \u201cI haven\u2019t tapped into my principals yet\u2026that\u2019ll start on Friday,\u201d she expressed, projecting a calm demeanor despite the looming deadline.<\/p>\n

One may wonder how she manages to accomplish such intricate work under pressure. \u00a0SPOILER ALERT!\u00a0 She does indeed pull it off with apparent ease.<\/p>\n

Toybina, who has previously worked on \u00a0\u201cThe Masked Singer\u201d\u00a0 and \u00a0\u201cBeauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration,\u201d\u00a0 thrives in high-pressure situations and relishes challenging projects. The 30th anniversary of \u00a0\u201cThe Lion King\u201d\u00a0 showcased an immersive concert experience that celebrated the franchise’s transition from the 1994 animated film to the \u00a0Tony Award-winning musical\u00a0 and the live-action adaptations in 2019 and 2024. Notable cast members included original animated film alumni Jeremy Irons and Nathan Lane, alongside \u00a0Jennifer Hudson\u00a0, \u00a0Heather Headley\u00a0, and even \u00a0North West\u00a0. With 10 principal cast members and 30 dancers, this project marked one of Toybina’s most extensive undertakings.<\/p>\n

Before taking on the task, Toybina had seen every iteration of the \u00a0\u201cLion King\u201d\u00a0 franchise, including episodic TV series. To ensure the designs were suitable for the stage, she collaborated closely with the Broadway team. \u201cI wanted the principals to pop against the background projections and not overstep what had been laid out in the Broadway production,\u201d she explained. Toybina emphasized the importance of not merely mimicking existing designs but rather supporting them with her unique vision.<\/p>\n

In her research, Toybina dedicated countless hours to examining photographs of the animals that inspired her designs. \u201cFrom zebra ears to giraffe tails, all the colors of the animals, right down to rhino horns, we zoomed in on it all,\u201d she chuckled, reflecting on her extensive preparation.<\/p>\n

Toybina paid meticulous attention to cultural authenticity, particularly when designing tribal prints. \u201cIt\u2019s South African tribal. We needed to have the right colors and jewelry and ensure there were no crossovers,\u201d she stated. This dedication led her to break down the costume designs by character, creating style decks and mood boards tailored for each principal cast member, including \u00a0Hudson\u00a0 and \u00a0West\u00a0, who plays Young Simba. \u201cI spent time on the board to ensure it\u2019s her aesthetic and vibe,\u201d she mentioned.<\/p>\n

Choosing fabrics, prints, and colors was the next step. Toybina also accounted for rapid costume changes by designing functional pieces, like capes that transformed hyenas into wildebeests. \u201cI have three hyenas. They wear masks for a while, then throw on capes and become wildebeests,\u201d she clarified.<\/p>\n

Characters representing the Pride Lands, including rhinos, zebras, and elephants, came alive through her vision. Many designs began with bodysuits as the foundation, enhanced with unique elements like airbrushed stencils or hand-painted details. \u201cEverything is lightweight and danceable, with the durability to perform,\u201d she ensured, prioritizing comfort for the dancers.<\/p>\n

Not all components were custom-made\u2014some were sourced from stores. \u201cAt one point, we were at Joann\u2019s buying weave baskets to cut out,\u201d she recounted, humorously detailing how these baskets were incorporated into the elephants\u2019 costumes.<\/p>\n
