He died at his home in \u00a0Algiers\u00a0, said his children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph\">He is one of the few \u00a0African\u00a0 and \u00a0Arab directors\u00a0 to have contributed four times to the \u00a0Cannes Film Festival\u00a0, winning two major distinctions: the prize for the first work for \u00a0The Aur\u00e8s Wind\u00a0, in 1967, and the prestigious \u00a0Palm d&#8217;Or\u00a0 for \u00a0Chronicle of the Years of Embers\u00a0, in 1975. He remained the last living laureate of the \u00a0Palme d&#8217;Or\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph\">A tribute was paid to him during the \u00a0Cannes Festival\u00a0 by projecting the \u00a04K work version\u00a0 of his film \u00a0Chronicle of the Years of Embers\u00a0 as part of the \u00a0Cannes Classic\u00a0 program.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article__sub-title\">Self-Taught Filmmaker<\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph\"><em>Chronicle of the Years of Embers<\/em> permanently established this \u00a0self-taught\u00a0 filmmaker as a \u00a0world-renowned director\u00a0. The struggle for the \u00a0independence of Algeria\u00a0 is at the heart of this monumental historical fresco, portraying the journey of the Algerian people and their struggle against \u00a0French colonization\u00a0 and the war of independence from 1954 to 1962.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph\">Born on \u00a0February 26, 1934\u00a0, in \u00a0M&#8217;Sila\u00a0 in the \u00a0Aur\u00e8s\u00a0, Mohamed Lakhdar-Hamina was raised in a family of modest peasants in the highlands. Following a school of \u00a0agriculture\u00a0, he studied in \u00a0France\u00a0, specifically in \u00a0Antibes\u00a0, where he met his wife, with whom he had four sons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph\">During the \u00a0Algerian War\u00a0, his father was captured, tortured, and killed by the \u00a0French army\u00a0.
