Greektown Open for Business Despite Construction<\/h2>\n

Greektown wants you to know that they are **open for business** despite construction. As revitalization continues in Detroit\u2019s Greektown, some businesses are concerned about decreased foot traffic and want to remind residents that they remain operational amid the construction chaos.<\/p>\n

The **Greektown Monroe Streetscape project** aims to transform the district into a more pedestrian-friendly space. This includes pedestrian zones, **human-scale landscaping**, and enhanced lighting for both visibility and safety measures.<\/p>\n

The project is projected to take another year to complete, with a tentative opening date set for **summer 2026**. \u201cDon\u2019t mind the big fences and orange barrels \u2014 that\u2019s always a deterrent,\u201d said Greektown business owner **Yanni Dionisopoulos**.<\/p>\n

Dionisopoulos is engaged with the **Greektown Neighborhood Partnership** that is spearheading this initiative. He mentions that these enhancements have been long anticipated and, upon receiving **$20 million** in state funding due to a budget surplus, the plan could finally be realized.<\/p>\n

He remarked, \u201cThe vision\u2019s been always there, the funding not \u2014 and then, obviously, when the funding was announced, yes, we had our own little party.\u201d Despite the exciting changes, construction efforts will include street closures and barriers, which may give the impression that businesses on Monroe Street are closed. Dionisopoulos and fellow business owners urge the community to support them during this transition.<\/p>\n

Jalen Rose Leadership Academy Expands Thanks to Donation<\/h2>\n

The **Jalen Rose Leadership Academy** in Detroit is expanding after receiving a significant donation from **Henry Ford Health**.<\/p>\n

The donation consists of a former **Kingswood Hospital**, a **70,000-square-foot** facility in Royal Oak Township, which will be converted into a new campus for the charter school.<\/p>\n

The announcement came during the **15th annual Jalen Rose Leadership Academy Celebrity Golf Classic** at the Detroit Golf Club on Monday. \u201cWe get zero state funding, so to have the support of Henry Ford Health and the donation of a facility allows us to expand significantly. It’s an incredible undertaking,” said Jalen Rose, co-founder of the academy and former NBA player.<\/p>\n

Renovations will begin later this year, transforming the former behavioral health facility into a new high school campus, while the current academy building will be converted into a middle school, opening admissions for **sixth to eighth graders** for the first time.<\/p>\n

Mid-Michigan Towns Rebuild After Dam Failures<\/h2>\n

Five years have passed since catastrophic events struck the lakeside village of **Sanford**, and while much has been rebuilt, the lake itself remains absent. \u201cI\u2019d really like to see the water back,\u201d said local business owner **Linda Shephard**, gazing at what used to be the lake.<\/p>\n

While there were no fatalities from the devastating **500-year flood** in Midland County, approximately **2,500 homes** were damaged or destroyed. Many businesses perished, and residents felt abandoned. On the very day before the dams broke, Shephard received approval to open her dream venture, the **Sanford Lake Marina**, which was swallowed by the flood within hours.<\/p>\n

Despite the chaos, new businesses have emerged, such as **ice cream parlors**, **grocery stores**, and even **cannabis shops**. Shephard shared, \u201cIt\u2019s caused us to reinvent ourselves and get to know our neighbors, if we didn\u2019t already.\u201d However, not all community members share this optimism.<\/p>\n

**Carl Hamann** lived only a block from the damaged dam, where water once reached *chest height* in his home. \u201cIt was a good year for me,\u201d he remarked sarcastically about the loss of everything he had built in his life.<\/p>\n

The situation surrounding the dam failures continues to unfold, as **Boyce Hydro**, the owner of the dams, fights legal battles stemming from the negligence leading up to the disaster. Residents like Hamann are taking action, aiming to hold not only the company but also the **State of Michigan** accountable for their perceived negligence regarding the Edenville Dam’s maintenance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
