She mentions those who need extra help at school, those who are not doing well at home and those who struggle socially. It is these who lose the most now, according to Engh. – Children who need a lot of special education will be able to function more poorly, they may be severely behind in their learning. For many of these students, the structure of the school is absolutely essential for them to function well in everyday life. The children’s ombudsman says they receive many messages from children and parents who say that it is now very difficult. Engh also says that it is clear that there are large local differences in the provision children with special education receive. She has sent a letter to the Ministry of Education asking them to explain how vulnerable pupils are looked after during the strike. – I ask them to provide an overview, because the authorities need to know how this turns out. The parties must also take this into account. Engh does not want to comment on what she thinks about the parties not reaching an agreement. – Apologies to all students – We do not agree because the employer does not come to meet us. They reject all our solutions, and then the strike must continue. That’s what Steffen Handal, head of the Education Association, says. As he sees it, it may still take a long time before the strike can be called off. – We are far away from each other and KS must approach us if we are to find a solution. The teachers are not demanding, it is actually the case that they have had a worse pay trend than others in the municipal sector for many years in a row. And it is serious that employers do not see the connection between the salary development and the teacher shortage we are experiencing. Handal thinks it is good that the Children’s Ombudsman is getting involved in the strike, and says the teachers have a great understanding that this is difficult for many. – I apologize to all students who are affected. But we have an employer who does not take the teacher shortage seriously and who continues to make the teachers wage losers year after year. Photo: Stig Weston \/ Uddanningsforbundet KS believes that KS has gone to great lengths to find a solution – It is very regrettable that the Uddanningsforbundet chooses a sharp escalation of the strike. It does not contribute to a solution. It will only have major negative consequences for even more students who lose lessons and a normal everyday school life. KS has gone the extra mile and come up with a concrete and constructive proposal that should be able to contribute to resolving the strike. This is what KS’s director of employment, Tor Arne Gangs\u00f8, writes in an e-mail to news. He says KS is obliged by the fact that they have entered into a collective agreement with all other trade unions in the municipal sector. Many teachers also do well here, especially young and newly qualified ones, Gangs\u00f8 believes. He also supports the concerns of the Children’s Ombudsman. – It is disheartening that children and young people do not get the education they should have, especially after two years of a pandemic, where everyday school life has been turned upside down.
