Then I can rather work my way up the system and change it. That’s what 24-year-old Andrea Cecilie Kristensen Wisbech says. She is in her final year of primary school teacher training at the University of Western Norway in Bergen. In addition to her master’s degree, she has also applied for a research program at the school. Like several other student teachers, she is unsure whether she actually wants to work as a teacher. Student organisation: – Not surprised – Last week one of my fellow students told me that she knew she wasn’t going to become a teacher, but to get a scholarship you have to complete the whole degree. Then it was better for her to finish, once she has completed three years of study, says Wisbech. This year’s Study Barometer substantiates the dissatisfaction. There, primary school teacher students and lecturer students were among the least satisfied. – I am not surprised that there are students who consider quitting during the course of their studies, says Lars Strande Syrrist, leader of the Pedagogstudentene. Syrrist is himself a newly qualified teacher this year. The 29-year-old says that several newly qualified teachers do not want to work as teachers. – It is a tendency we have seen over time, and for which we have also investigated the cause. The majority feel that the education has not prepared them well enough to start in the profession as a teacher, says Syrrist. NOT SURPRISED: Lars Strande Syrrist is leader of the student organization Pedagogstudentene. He is not surprised that student teachers are considering quitting. Photo: The teaching students in the Norwegian Education Association highlight pay and poor motivation Syrrist also highlights pay, motivation and practice as reasons why some decide they do not want to work as teachers. – More than half of those who choose not to start as a teacher when they have completed their education state salary as the reason. We also need more and better practice. In the Gnist report to the government from 2016, it emerged that one in four graduates did not start work as a teacher. The same report also shows that one in six teachers quit within the first six years on the job. HVL: The University of Western Norway in Bergen has a number of different teacher training courses. Photo: Simon Skjelvik Brandseth / news Support the teachers’ strike Poor pay and lack of motivation have also been highlighted by the Education Association as some of the reasons for the ongoing teachers’ strike. A strike that both Wisbech and Syrrist support. Syrrist, who has just graduated, wants to enter the profession himself. – Even though I don’t work as a teacher yet, I am still motivated to work in school. – So the teacher’s strike does not paint the profession black for you as a newly qualified teacher? – No not at all. It is in its place. We must help shape the society of the future, and then we must have competent teachers who are motivated and receive the competitive salary they deserve. TEACHERS’ STRIKE IN BERGEN: Bergen is the municipality most affected by the teachers’ strike. Photo: Charlotte Haarvik Sanden / news KS: – The salary helps to ensure recruitment Frode Kyrkjebø is the general manager of KS Vestland and the other party in the strike. He believes that the proposal they have put on the table during this year’s salary settlement prioritizes young newly qualified teachers. – As a newly qualified teacher, you will receive a salary increase of NOK 36,000. This gives a newly qualified teacher with a master’s degree NOK 560,000 plus in annual salary, and we believe it helps to ensure recruitment into the teaching profession. He adds that 40 per cent of the teachers who are no longer in teaching positions are still connected to the teaching sector. – Then we have a different perception of qualified teachers. We use the Education Act and figures from the Directorate of Education as a basis, while the Norwegian Education Association would like to use the classic teacher education to define a qualified teacher. The teachers’ strike has been going on since the end of June. Around 3,500 teachers are on strike. From Tuesday next week, there will be a sharp escalation. Around 6,500 teachers will then be on strike.

ttn-69

– If I rather take the path towards becoming an academic, then I might get rid of the bad conscience.
