Over the past year, the 21-year-old has risen half a million monthly listeners on Spotify and 10 million streams in total. Despite having published only a number of singles and the EP “twenty years” (2024), Sten has had three songs on Spotify Top 50, at the same time. Although country may not be the most popular genre in Norway, it is clear that the big arch is doing something right. He thus follows in the footsteps of large American pop stars such as Beyoncé, Post Malone, Chappell Roan and Stavern-bookete Shaboozey, all of whom have done their best to make the country cool among the younger generation. On our side of the pond, with the self-titled debut album “Tobias Stone”, good old-fashioned nashville-country is mixed with modern and all-sing-friendly pop-refreshes. Doesn’t really say much album title immediately gives the impression that the album’s songs are about who Tobias is as a person. On his debut album, Sten takes on experiences about being a young man and a child of divorce, and the great feelings that belong to this trauma. Open: One of the album’s tracks is called “Have some things to say”, but should Sten say even more? Photo: Marius Sørgjerd / Universal Music Of course, it is positive, and not least important, that Sten opens to talk about difficult things. At the same time, this was done by Tammy Wynette as early as 1968, and recently by Zach Bryan in 2023. The album is a collection of nine dots like songs written in different fonts and one that stands out, though as a sore thumb. If you heard the songs “Ka Know I” and “Have some things to say” you have really heard everyone. Fortunately, the songs are consistently good, but also incredibly predictable. The exception is the song “When she turned on the TV”, a Frankenstein monster of country blues, rockabilly and pop – and definitely the worst album. The expectations that the 21-year-old will elaborate on what is running his musical commitment and what makes him a unique artist is never fulfilled. Even with very own guitar and live bands on the recording, the country artist plays the same string from start to finish. Thin and thick nylon and steel strings such as the themes and texts are the same, the same applies to the instruments as well. The album is well produced and sounds beautifully purely sonic, but again it is so that you have heard one song you have heard all. Tobias has a great voice, he has an obvious talent for beautiful melodies and knows how emotions are conveyed through music. Live: Tobias Sten appeared at Trondheim Calling in February. Photo: Eskil Olaf Vestre / news P3 Nevertheless, when all the songs are based on four repetitive grips on acoustic guitar, the same long tones from the steel guitar and a random solo from the electric guitar in conclusion, it quickly becomes dull. By tossing a chorus that repeats the same word or stanza three to four times, the stone gets the cross by all the points on the checklist “How to create generic song”. On the other hand, the single “Eli” is a great example of a country ballad you want to come back to. It is not too rocky to go into americana, but not too poppy so it loses charm. It is a song that is thought to be thoughtful and processed, and the result is heard accordingly. The start of a good story one forgets that Tobia’s stone is only 21 years old, and that it is quite natural not to have experienced the greatest things in life, or gone through the same wear and tear as American country artists in the 1920s did. In other words, it is not without reason that “Tobias Stone” is unfortunately experienced more as a footnote than as a larger story. He has, apparently, not much more to sing about beyond what he has done over the past year. Career in front of him: Tobias Stone, here at “P3 Gold” 2024. Photo: Henriette Dæhli, news P3 This debut album lays a good foundation for his career. Over time, Sten will undoubtedly experience more, explore more themes and pages of life. When that time comes, one thing is for sure: it will sound heartbreaking and lovely. Right now we get to thank a good singing voice and a relatively fresh breath in a genre that is constantly associated with either party music and pink cowboy hats or working class cosplay and rolling tobacco.
