They report this in a press release. Rabies have never been detected in mainland Norway, but are detected sporadically in Svalbard, the last time in 2018, according to the institute. At that time, the disease was detected in four mountain foxes and one reindeer on the archipelago. – If you observe mountain foxes or reindeer that show abnormal behavior at Svalbard, immediately report to the Governor. Don’t handle the animals yourself! Dogs must be kept under supervision, and it is encouraged not to feed reefs, says Knut Madslien, head of the livestock, wildlife and welfare at the Veterinary Institute. The disease is very dangerous for both animals and humans. Rabies were also detected at wild in Svalbard in 1980 and 2011, where four mountain reefs and ten Svalbard were positive for the disease in 2011. The Veterinary Institute has attached this picture of the mountain reef. It was sent to the Veterinary Institute at Ås for rabies examination.

ttn-69

The Veterinary Institute has shown rabies at a mountain reef in Svalbard.
