You\u2019re creating new data every day. If your health app counts your steps? That\u2019s new data. The Oura ring that\u2019s tracking your biometrics? Valuable data. Your social media posts, even the stupid jokes that got zero likes? More data.<\/p>\n<p>This is all data that AI companies would love to harvest. You can\u2019t build good AI without good data, which is why many view data as the \u201cnew oil\u201d in the race for AI. The problem, though, is that while your data is valuable <em>in theory<\/em>, the reality is that it\u2019s hard to monetize your own personal data, as you have no leverage as an individual. (OpenAI isn\u2019t knocking at your door to buy your old tweets.)<\/p>\n<p>Enter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vana.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vana<\/a>. \u201cI think data is this fundamental resource powering the next generation of AI, and really the next generation of our digital economy,\u201d says Anna Kazlauskas, co-founder of Vana and CEO of Open Data Labs. \u201cA lot of people frankly just don&#8217;t realize that they actually own their data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But you do own your data. And it\u2019s valuable\u2026 if you can somehow join forces with millions of others who also own their data. This would give you bargaining power. And that\u2019s the mission of Vana: To create an ecosystem for user-owned data, which in turn fuels user-owned AI.<\/p>\n<p>That ecosystem involves a mix of Data DAOs (a \u201clabor union\u201d for data), decentralized data marketplaces, the recently launched VRC-20 token, and a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vana.org\/posts\/vana-flower-labs-partnership\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collaboration<\/a> with Flower Labs to build the world\u2019s first user-owned foundational model. And she sees the momentum shifting. \u201cWe&#8217;re already starting to see this shift where more people realize that, \u2018My data is really important to AI\u2019 and \u2018I\u2019m actually the owner of that.\u2019\u201d She predicts that in a few years, over 100 million users will be onboard. In 10 years? \u201cWorld population.
