Also in “The Legend of Ochi” the forest is a magical kingdom with mythical creatures in conflict with short -thinking people. Director and screenwriter Isaiah Saxon has created an enchanting adventure with both excitement, drama, light and darkness. At the same time, he has a clear heartbeat for his characters, both the human and the more trolled, which creates a commitment to them all among the audience. Hunters: Maxim (Willem Dafoe) and Petro (Finn Wolfhard) are looking for both Yuri and Ochier in “The Legend of Ochi”. Photo: Ymer Media “The Legend of Ochi” may not break new fields in a well -known genre, but plays well on our fascination for folklore with dark moods. This is also one of the most beautiful films I have seen in a long time, with a magical expression in the borderland between visual realism and the mildly adventurous, not quite unlike in, for example, Spike Jonzes “to the Land of Huten” (2009), just even more stylized. Scary creatures in the forest history take place in the Romanian part of the mountain range Carpathians. The time is not specified, but the style of the costumes, the scenography and the Eastern European rock music on the soundtrack indicates the 1980s. The young girl Yuri (Helena Zengel) lives on a remote farm with his father Maxim (Willem Dafoe) and adoptive brother Petro (Finn Wolfhard). In the forests around them there are also some creepy creatures called ochi, which humans scour like the plague and vice versa. NEW FRIEND: Yuri (Helena Zengel) will bring an ochi-baby back to his own in the adventure film “The Legend of Ochi”. Photo: YMER MEDIA MAXIM hunts Ochier with her daughter, the adoptive son and a bunch of local youth. He blames the creatures for once losing his great love, Dasha (Emily Watson). However, when Yuri finds an injured and lost ochi-baby in the woods, she gets a completely different impression of him, and decides to give him back to the Ochis. However, it will be an eventful journey with unknown dangers, while also having Maxim and his shotgun hunting team. Exceptional style security This is the debut film of Isaiah Saxon, an obviously great talent that has previously excelled with several short films and music videos (including for Bj\u00f6rk). The recording took place all the way back in 2021, so it has taken time to complete the movie, but it is obviously used well. Saxon exhibits an exceptional style security in the borderland between the real -life and the imaginative, well supported by composer David Longstreth’s literally adventurous film music. “The Legend of Ochi” also has several fabulous features that we can recognize from Norwegian folk tales. If the carpathes were replaced with Jotunheimen and Ochien with a sorcerer, the film could have been made in Norwegian. Known faces: “Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard plays the supporting role as Petro in “The Legend of Ochi”. Photo: Ymer Media The Little Ochi is also a pretty obvious cross by Gizmo from “Gremlins” (1984), ABU from “Aladdin” (1992), Stitch from “Lilo & Stitch” (2002) and Grogu from “The Mandalorian” (2021). Fortunately, he is not a digital creature, but a brilliantly made doll that is brought to life with practical effects – and blows the scale of immediate crushing crushing. The rest of the film’s expression is also created with effective effects, some digital, but many also of the practical kind, including the director’s own “math Paintings” (an old film trick to create an optical illusion of a three -dimensional environment or background). Highly recommended the German star shot Helena Zengel (“Systemsprengeren”, “News of the World”) is a fine center of the center of yuri, full of conscience, self -sufficiency and courage. At the same time, I wish the figure was a notch warmer, a bit like Elliott (Henry Thomas) in “ET” (1982), another film about an unexpected friendship between a child and a foreign creature. The “Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard also makes a usable supporting role as adoptive brother Petro, but he disappears a bit in the course of action and may have been used more. Always bizarre Willem Dafoe (“Wild At Heart”, “Spider-Man”, “Poor Things”) eats up all scenes he is in as a bite and half-crazy ochi-hunter dressed in armor. BAST MOTHER: Emily Watson plays Dasha in “The Legend of Ochi”. Photo: Ymer Media There is a dramatic nerve in the history wire of Yuri’s mother, who also appears in the film, played by Emily Watson (“Breaking The Waves”, “Chernobyl”, “Dune: Prophecy”). Right here, maybe Isaiah Saxon should have taken an extra round of the script, because this problem gets you too simple a solution that doesn’t feel satisfactory enough. However, “The Legend of Ochi” has such strong qualities on many other fronts that it can be highly recommended to anyone with a heart for the 1980s boundless adventure films.
