In January, leaders from 30 African nations convened in Dar-es-Salaam for the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit, aiming to enhance access to affordable and sustainable electricity. Twelve countries presented national plans to help achieve the goal of providing energy access to 300 million people by 2030. A UN report noted a decrease in those without electricity, from 958 million in 2015 to 685 million in 2022. Growth in renewable energy has been significant, particularly in the global south. Improved energy access supports other sustainability goals, promoting education, health, and economic opportunities, especially for girls and women.

In January, leaders and governments from 30 African countries gathered in Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania to hold the two-day-long energy summit Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit. The goal was to collaborate on solutions to increase access to affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity. Twelve countries – Chad, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritiania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania and Zambia – had clear national plans for how to achieve this. The countries agreed to commit to ambitious, concrete measures to give 300 million more people energy access by 2030. Access to energy is increasing – also from renewable energy sources according to the UN’s latest report on the progress of the 17 sustainability goals – the action plan that the world’s country agreed for ten years ago – there have been significant advances for sustainability. – The number of people without access to electricity fell from 958 million people in 2015 to 685 million people in 2022, the UN writes in the report. The total amount of electricity from renewable sources has grown. Globally, installed electricity capacity from renewable energy has increased from 250 watts per capita in 2015 to 424 watts per capita in 2022. As a percentage of installed capacity, growth has been greatest in countries in the global south, which has seen an increase in renewable energy from 155 watts renewable per capita in 2015 to 293 watts per capita in 2022. This corresponds to almost a doubling. Increased energy access contributes to other sustainability goals According to a report from UNICEF, increased energy access improves access and quality of other necessary services, such as education, health services, water and sanitary conditions. These improvements can again provide better equality: – Sustainable energy solutions can engage and strengthen girls and young women by increasing school access and the opportunity to do school work at home. It can also save them time and effort from having to travel a long way to retrieve water and fuel, provide better security at night and strengthen technical skills as well as opportunities for livelihoods, UNICEF writes in the report. In addition, renewable energy can provide jobs to local communities, while also helping to limit climate change. These relationships mean that measures to increase energy access also help to promote the other sustainability goals. Collaboration to achieve the goals four out of five, which is currently without access to electricity, is located in sub -Saharan Africa. Therefore, Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit represents an important milestone. The clear goal of giving 300 million more people energy access by 2030 will mean that half of the 600 million that are now without access to the African continent can access within five years.
