It sold well when it was originally published in 2016, but when the book trended on TikTok in 2021, it took Hoover’s writing to a new level. Photo: Screenshots from TikTok TRENDING: Colleen Hoover has published more than 20 books in just 10 years. Four of them are currently at the top of the top 10 list of English paperbacks at the Ark bookstore. Photo: Christine Rehn Jensen / news With the book “Verity”, which was published in English in 2018, Hoover ventured into new waters when she added a dose of thriller and horror along with romance and spicy erotica. Exciting and shocking “Verity” is about the author Lowen Ashleigh who writes novels almost no one reads. One day she receives a mysterious request from a large publishing house. Bestselling author Verity Crawford, Lowen’s direct opposite, has been involved in a serious accident. She lies unconscious in bed, completely unable to communicate. Can Lowen complete her popular novel series? Lowen moves in with the popular author’s family to familiarize himself with the project. As Verity lies in bed in the next room, Lowen finds her unpublished autobiography. The manuscript both excites and shocks her, because here new sides of Verity emerge. And then the question is, isn’t there room for an ever-so-slight romance between Lowen and Verity’s loyal husband, Jeremy? Suction. And swallowing. And of course! Without revealing too much: There will be romance. After all, love is Hoover’s specialty. Hoover has several similarities with “Fifty Shades of Grey” author EL James, who is actually mentioned in the acknowledgments list. Both debuted and climbed to the top of the bestseller lists with self-published books. Both have been criticized for glorifying harmful relationships, and neither is afraid to write explicit sex scenes. In “Verity” there is plenty of erotica, but also more straight-ahead sex. Here are sentences like these: Feelings and such Hoover has stated that if she doesn’t feel anything while writing, she only makes the plot sadder or scarier. It is felt. It provides a certain catharsis to read about these people whom Hoover has placed in mildly hair-raising situations. Some of the sex scenes are mildly arousing and will give both you, me and grandma a rush of blood to the genitals. And Hoover sometimes manages to trigger the “What’s going to happen now?” nerve. That in itself gives the book value. But there is no getting away from the fact that the plot is very unreliable. For example, the opening scene that introduces the main character and Jeremy to each other is so gratuitous and bordering on parodic, that it took me a while to trust the narration again. This is how the novel opens as a completely random person is hit by a truck: The book becomes involuntarily fascinating in its total lack of realism. Cohorts of fans Colleen Hoover currently dominates the New York Times bestseller list with four books in the top ten. Her books are fully lent out at the Oslo libraries, both the originals and the Norwegian translations. All bookstores have 5–10 of her books on display at any given time. This is literature that the people have welcomed with open arms. I can understand why. Hoover’s most famous book, “It ends with us”, is, in my opinion, successful popular literature. The chapters are more densely composed with better cliffhangers and plot twists. The book also has a greater touch of risk in its thematization of partner violence. I see on TikTok that “Verity” is held in high regard by the many CoHorts, the nickname for Hoover fans. It surprises me, because in my opinion the crime and thriller elements of this novel simply do not work. When the development in the book makes me smile where it should actually scare me, that’s a problem. This book is garbage. But there is a badger in all of us. It is this badger who gets something out of this book. news reviewer Photo: Gursli Berg Title: “Verity” Author: Colleen Hoover Translated by: Elisabeth Haukeland Genre: Thriller Publisher: Gursli Berg Number of pages: 367 Date: August 2022

ttn-69

Popular author Colleen Hoover is the queen of the #booktok TikTok trend.
