Are you among those who have not gone alone to the cinema? Because you have feared to get the burning eyes of others in your neck, as you and your popcorn drop into the single seat? Because you think the pity will wave against you, from scraped friends or couples on the date? Because you think they think you don’t have friends because you don’t have friends with you right now? Well, fear no more. New figures from the largest cinema chains in Norway show that more and more people are going alone in the cinema. 17 percent of all cinema tickets sold are now single tickets. The shame releases the roof. It seems that it is much more obvious to us to believe that people who are alone have probably chosen it themselves, whether it is at the cinema, theater, restaurant or holiday. The challenge is not to scream away from friction and negotiations, from the tolerance it requires to be in a larger group. And not to forget what riot it may be just to spend time together. At the same time, it is allowed to enjoy the freedom of being alone. In being able to watch exactly the movie you want to watch, when you are free and want. To walk down the street in a foreign city and turn right or left depending on what the deposit indicates, to fall into a cafe you like without having to look around and ask, “What about this one?” Exactly how to get to this balance is something I have to think about a little.
