Because you have feared to get the burning eyes of others in your neck, as you and your popcorn drop into the single seat? Because you think the pity will wave against you, from scraped friends or couples on the date? Because you think they think you don’t have friends because you don’t have friends with you right now? Well, fear no more. New figures from the largest cinema chains in Norway show that more and more people are going alone in the cinema. 17 percent of all cinema tickets sold are now single tickets. The shame releases the roof. It seems that it is much more obvious to us to believe that people who are alone have probably chosen it themselves, whether it is at the cinema, theater, restaurant or holiday. Don’t need friends: Anyone considering watching the “Minecraft” movie alone is not, well, alone about it. Photo: Mia Sofie Ytreberg \/ news for both cultural life and for the individual this is great. Cinemas and theaters do not miss ticket sales because your friend was going to training the only evening you were free. Those who are actually lonely in their lives do not get the additional burden by being forced to waive cultural experiences. Those who want to watch a particular movie or concert, or try out a new restaurant, don’t have to miss anything if friends don’t want to spend time or money on the same. Everyone wins. And yet. At an overall level, this goes into a tendency that is a little less lucky for us. There are several signs in the time that there is much more self -selected loneliness out there than before. Maybe a little too much. In January this year, Derek Thompson, journalist in American The Atlantic, chose to let the alarm bells chime what he called “the antisocial century”. Don’t need friends: Anyone considering watching the “Minecraft” movie alone is not, well, alone about it. Photo: Mia Sofie Ytreberg \/ news Thompson points to different statistics showing that the number of Americans who eat out with friends has gone down, that there are more and more table reservations for single tables, and that many restaurants survive due to takeaway. He views the self -chosen loneliness as a problem, a state where people do not notice that they make choices that are not good for them in the long run. “The real problem here, the core of America’s social problem, is that most Americans do not respond to the biological impulses to spend more time with other people,” he writes. “They are more alone, while many indicators of loneliness actually stay stable or sink”. In other words: Many people feel less lonely than they actually are. Other people can be a struggle. They arrive too late. You have to negotiate with them about which movie to watch. Afterwards, they might go to the new bar they had read about a place, the one that is a quarter of a walk away, and you are strictly for thin to want to go this far. The clothing store and cinema are in the living room. The restaurant food comes to the door. It can make the kind of negotiations that used to be a part of life, for every second you were not a nut alone, unfamiliar and unwanted. It can be more comfortable just not to. One of those who has noticed that people more and more often just just not, and who are annoyed by it, is Amalie Langballe, who writes in the Danish Weekendavisen. She thinks more often that friends cancel appointments. Not because they are sick or prevented. But because they just have to be a little for themselves. Photo: Sara Johannessen Meek \/ NTB Langballe thinks we underestimate the community if we think it is just something we can go into on our best days when we are entertaining and charming. “If it is only for his therapist you show their tears, their outbreaks, their tired, pale eyes, then you have actually hollowed out the very existence of the community,” she writes in a comment. When you meet friends less often, you do not need to jeopard up to others than those you may live with. Derek Thompson points out that this can create a new closeness between you and your family, or between you and your opinions on the web. At the same time, it can weaken the ties to the surroundings, to the neighborhood, to the social village. It has become easier to opt out of those you know who sometimes go on your nerves, who vote something other than you, who are somehow difficult to relate to. Alone at Caf\u00e9: Norms are changing, and it has become more common to go out and do things on your own. Photo: Reuters Every time we get a new freedom, new challenges arise. The challenge is not to scream away from friction and negotiations, from the tolerance it requires to be in a larger group. And not to forget what riot it may be just to spend time together. At the same time, it is allowed to enjoy the freedom of being alone. In being able to watch exactly the movie you want to watch, when you are free and want. To walk down the street in a foreign city and turn right or left depending on what the deposit indicates, to fall into a cafe you like without having to look around and ask, “What about this one?” Exactly how to get to this balance is something I have to think about a little. Maybe next time I’m alone in a cafe.
