TIKTOK-EIGAR BYTEDANCE has announced that they will appeal the decision of the fine of 530 million euros. This corresponds to NOK 6.2 billion. It is the Irish Data Inspectorate (DPC) that believes that Bytance / Tiktok has broken the strict privacy rules. Access personal information about European users has been stored on Chinese servers and that Chinese employees have had access to these data. This applies to both TIKTOK users in the EU and in the EEA. In the investigation conducted by DPC, they have especially looked at transfers of data to China and whether Tiktok was open and obviously enough about this with the users. Admitted storage DPC thinks that Tiktok was not open with the users, something that is a break in the requirement for openness. TIKTOK initially stated that they did not store data in China, but admitted in April 2025 that some data had nevertheless been stored there – contrary to earlier information they had provided to DPC. The Irish Data Inspectorate now considers whether additional measures are needed, in consultation with other Data Inspectorate in the EU. Janne Stang Dahl in the Norwegian Data Inspectorate believes that DPC has made a thorough assessment. – We think this is a big deal, says Dahl. She points out that there are many personal information that is transferred to China. – It is serious that personal information from so many users is transferred to a country without the user himself knowing it, she thinks. The headquarters in Ireland punishes probably respond to the third highest cure that has ever been the one out of the Irish Data Inspectorate. Earlier, Amazon has been fined 746 million euros while Facebook owner Meta has been fined 1.2 billion euros. Irish authorities emitted most of these fines as most major technology companies have the European business address in Ireland. -Must take care of China expert Hans Jørgen Gåsemyr that the EU is tightening its grip on the large technology companies. – It’s serious, something they take very seriously. It is by no means surprising and TIKTOK is precursor to this, says Gåsemyr. He goes on to say that major changes occur internally in Tiktok. – Especially when it comes to how data is processed and stored. These changes are related to EU claims.
