Over 4 out of 10 think there is no acceptance of being trans, non-binary or having a different gender identity than the one you are born with. Leader of Skeiv Ungdom, Jane-Victorius Bonsaksen, thinks it is more difficult to stand out now than before and that hateful comments in social media need to be taken more seriously. Senior researcher at NTNU, Beate W. Hygen, was surprised by the figures. She believes the result of the survey reflects that young people are exposed to polarized attitudes in social media. The summary is made by a Ki service from Openai. The content is quality assured by news’s journalists before publishing. The debate on gender and sexual diversity is constantly relevant. As now, after KrF decided that they would ban rainbow flags in Norwegian school yards. “School leaders will not have to stand in the squeeze annually with what occasions are to be flagged and not,” the reason states. Although the KrF leader is clear that the party’s starting point is diversity and acceptance, many have reacted to the decision as the opposite. Precisely this with acceptance for gender and sexual diversity, researchers at NTNU Social Research have looked at. The survey: NTNU Social Research has made a deep dive into various punks from the student survey 2024, and focuses on the pupils’ experience of the school environment, especially aspects such as well -being, belonging and the school’s goal structure. The report also highlights topics such as stress, pressure and tolerance. The survey was conducted among students and high school staff. 2431 pupils participated: 54.6 percent girls, 44.1 boys and 1.3 non-binary/other. The participants came from seven counties, 44 schools and 16 educational programs. A qualitative study has also been conducted at two different schools. You can read more about the content of the December 2024 report here. – The box is for the narrow survey shows that 3 out of 10 high school students believe there is no acceptance and tolerance for having a different sexual orientation than heterosexual at school they attend. Over 4 out of 10 believe there is no acceptance and tolerance at school to be trans, not -binary or have a different gender identity than the one you are born with. Nearly 2,500 students from all over the country participated in the survey. “It’s very sad to see,” says Jane-Victorius Bonsaksen, leader of Skeiv Ungdom. However, Bonsaksen is not surprised. – We even look at the fact that there is a low threshold to stand out. Skeive has to stand out in some way, but it is difficult to fit in when the box is too tight. We see more of it now than before. – It is very painful to see that it should be like that, and that it should be so difficult to be young. There should be more room to both dress and tea as you are. Visible diversity is very important to do so, Bonsaksen believes. Photo: Kim Erlandsen/news Skeiv Youth leader believes high school students, and people elsewhere in society, are influenced by hatred aimed at the skewed environment in social media. – At the same time, we have power persons – both politicians and influencers, who talk negatively about Pride, about trans people and about being gay. It affects. As soon as someone you look up to talks negatively about it, it is suddenly not so cool anymore. Bonsaksen thinks we must start taking hateful comments in social media more seriously. – What we see is that commentary can be reflected in reality. We must stop trying to separate the internet and life there from life in reality. The researcher is surprised Beate W. Hygen is a senior researcher for the Diversity department and inclusion at NTNU Social Research in Trondheim. She was surprised when she saw the numbers coming in from the survey. – That as many as four out of ten say they disagree that it is acceptance and tolerance, I think is incredibly high. I didn’t expect the numbers to be so high. Especially not from this age group. Beate Wold Hygen is a researcher at NTNU Social Research. Photo: Private – It also reflects what we find in the student survey – that the group, ie those who state having a different gender identity than the one they were born with, report three times as much bullying than other students. Intolerance has actual consequences in behavior. “If you are gay, you should be quite strong” Hygen says that in adolescence there is great pressure on being the same, so that standing out can increase the risk of exclusion and negative feedback. – Youth are currently exposed to polarized attitudes, including to transgender people, on social media. It can affect their own attitudes – which is reflected in our survey. When asked if it is easy for students to stand out at school, one of the teachers in the survey replies like this: “No, and we talk a lot about that as well. They have too little expertise in it. If you have blue hair, or if you are gay, you should be quite strong. ” – We see, among other things, from living conditions surveys that those who belong to the slice environment come out worse on, for example, mental health. We know that being able to be yourself, and being accepted for who you are, has a bearing on how we feel, says Hygen.
