This is how the athletics hope Solveig Vråle describes the weeks in October, when she was seriously ill after inserting a hormonal spiral. – I was so lonely. I was scared, and it was really scary to lie there, she says openly, before she adds: – It was actually absolutely cruel. Talking out: Solveig Vråle. Photo: Roy Kenneth Sydnes Jacobsen / news 800-meter specialist, who had high sporting ambitions for this year’s athletics season, was in Australia for some long-awaited weeks with his little sister Carolina. There they would enjoy sun and heat, while foreign student Carolina should do away with some exams. GOOD FRIENDS: The sisters Vråle has a close relationship, and Solveig was looking forward to the trip to Australia to visit Carolina. Photo: Solveigvraale, Instagram but it never became the idyllic sisters had hoped. Solveig felt bad already on the flight, and when she arrived at her sister’s temporary homeland, she was completely worn out. The first few days were spent bedridden. On day three, she fought out of the apartment and joined a mall. She ended up throwing up a flower pot. – My sister was like that: “Should I call an ambulance? Need help? Shall we get something? ” But I was like that, “No, my God, it’s over.” There she was wrong. In trouble: Vråle, here in action under the NM in 2023, was used to having a very active lifestyle. In Australia, she couldn’t do anything. Photo: Image Agency / news “Oh, Fy Søren, so sick you are” for the form only got worse, and Solveig ended up in hospital, where a number of samples were taken. – And then he came back with the test results, and then he was quite like that: “Oh, fuck the south, so sick you are”, like. So then I had over 400 in CRP. It probably doesn’t say much to so many, but it is at least insanely high. In healthy, CRP is usually below five, according to large medical lexicon. The days went by, and the athlete did not improve. The doctors did not find the cause of the 25-year-old’s sky-high CRP, despite countless tests. It was the uncertainty that made her fear the worst. Eventually she was moved to another hospital. They noticed that she had put in a hormonal spiral a few days before leaving for Australia, and they suspected it could be the triggering factor. According to Norwegian Health Informatics (NHI), the insertion of spiral presents a slight increased risk of pelvic infection for the first three months. -It turned out that it was a pelvic infection from the spiral, which had become very, very infected, says the 25-year-old. Touched by her boyfriend’s reaction she was lonely and scared, and in addition she struggled with the time difference. – I remember spoken down until half past three in Australia, because then at half past seven in Norway, and then I knew that my cohabitant woke up and could call me. Private – How was this for your cohabitant? – He was very worried at home in Norway. We had only been boyfriends for a few months, and I had never seen him cry, says Vråle, and continues: – He told me he had cried like a kid. I think it’s a little sweet, which may be a bit strange, she says and laughs. The 25-year-old really appreciated that her boyfriend arranged so she got flowers delivered to the hospital, and not least: that her mother took the long journey to Australia to be with her sick daughter. Beate Oma Dahle / NTB Andrea Rooth – What Solveig has experienced, are all female top athletes’ greatest nightmare. Something like that just shouldn’t happen, says crochet runner Andrea Rooth. The 23-year-old is glad that Vråle chooses to be open about the experience.-I have always seen her as a strong girl both mentally and physically, and I hope such stories help focus more on women’s health-even in top sports, says Rooth. Joel Marklund / Bildhyrenån Henriette Jæger – This that has happened Solveig is incredibly sad, says Henriette Jæger. The national team profile applauds that Vråle chooses to tell the story. – Very nice that Solveig chooses talk openly about it. Should have been much more of it, Jæger thinks. Lise Åserud / NTB Amalie Sæten – it’s really fierce, what Solveig has experienced. I had no idea that a spiral could lead to something like that, and that it should characterize her for so long, says the runner Amalie Sæten. She cheers on the openness, and that Vråle talks about the topic of birth control. – As a female athlete, there is little focus on this, and we should have wanted more info and learning on how to relate to it. Marius Simensen / Bildhylån Laura Veen – It is incredibly good that she has had very bad luck with the side effects of the birth control, says runner Laura Veen, who points out that she herself has positive experiences with a hormone spiral. For athletes, she says. Beate Oma Dahle / NTB Lakeri Ertzgaard – I was very surprised. That the consequences of using birth control can be so delayed, I did not know, and that emphasizes that there is too little knowledge of women’s health and in this case about contraceptives, says runner Lakeri Ertzgaard. She hopes Vrål’s openness will lead to more knowledge. – And also that it gives an extra push to take women’s health seriously, hopes Ertzgaard. Identity crisis nine days in hospitals, three weeks in Australia without a trip to the beach, and then waited several months out of operation at home in Norway. The experiences have made her confused. She feels that she is in an identity crisis. – I’ve always been “The runner Solveig”, and right now I don’t quite know who I am, or how to define myself. Screenshot: Solveigvraale, Instagram the season she had great hopes and dreams for, is spoiled. She is working to find the training and sports joy again. – That’s what has been the dream since I’ve been little. What has been my passion. – How do you look at your future as “Runner Solveig” now, then? -What I think is nice to think about is that female athletes often “peaker” in their 30s. So then I want to try to get there. Exercise as a deed to it. But if not, then maybe go a little more coach road, because I enjoy sharing running pleasure. Give from what I have learned all these years, to others, Vråre replies. Picks up barbed shoes: Vråle has taken the trip up the attic and picked up the spike shoes again. Now hare assignments are soon waiting. Expert: Tina Engseth. Photo: University of Tromsø Engseth has researched how the menstrual cycle and the use of hormonal contraceptives affect exercise and performance, and she is clear that it is not “straight forward”. – We have a lot of different experiences, and showing that you have individual experiences related to both cycles or to side effects with hormonal birth control, contribute to giving greater understanding, Engseth says, adding: – And not least leading individual stories and openness to getting used to this being a theme that should be a top of training. She receives support from Øyvind Sandbakk, sports director at the Norwegian Top Sports Gymnasium and Professor at the Norwegian Arctic University (UiT). – Women’s health in general and in the context of sports are topics that has been researched little on, talked little about, and which in many cases has been a bit taboo. So that people are open about it and lift it up, I think is very important and good, he says. Sandbakk says that there is about to become good professional environments related to menstruation, birth control and other women’s health challenges in sports, but that the theme of hormone prevention is complex, because it affects the user individually. – When taking an artificial preparation, it will interact with your normal cycle. And when different women have a slightly different hormone profile in the first place, the effect will be a little different, he explains.
