The content is quality assured by news’s journalists before publishing. For the corps is May 17, perhaps the most important day of the year. Corps music is also an important part of the celebration of many Norwegians. Now it can go against a quiet and unconventional celebration of Norway’s national day in Rana municipality. – Corps has been a big part of the celebration in our family for many years. It will be very strange if there is no music in the May 17 trains this year, says Freddie Teigland. He is chairman of Båsmo & Ytteren school corps. Båsmo & Ytteren School Corps is one of seven corps that is included in the application for financial support for Rana municipality. The application was sent by Rana Cultural Council, on behalf of the corps. In the application, the Cultural Council points out that the budget for voluntary teams and associations in culture has been greatly reduced, from NOK 1.2 million to only NOK 800,000 this year. The membership of the Norwegian Music Corps Association increased for the fourth year in a row and is now up in 61,125. It is the highest in 13 years. Photo: Jan Kaare Ness / NTB – Sits far in the corps have been promised fees for the last two years to play on May 17. But the money has not been paid either in 2023 or 2024. Two years ago, the reason was that no money was put into the budget. And in 2024, the money was spent hiring audio equipment. In the application, the Cultural Council writes that it is disappointing that they have not received what they were promised. And that they now demand NOK 15,000 for each of the corps to play on National Day. There will be NOK 105,000 for the municipality. If they do not get these, they will not play. The head of the drumids, Lill-Anita Jørgensen, believes it is important that the municipality realizes that the corps in Rana believe seriously. What is May 17 without corps? We have been promised support for several years now, but have not received anything, she says. Jørgensen says that National Day is the day that matters most to the corps. – That’s why this is of course very sad. It is May 17th we practice for the whole year. It sits far in not to attend the day, she says. Rana Blad wrote about the case first. The municipal director has nominated the municipal director in Rana has set the refusal to the corps. It is notified to the corps that they will receive an answer to the application until April 29. Mayor Geir Waage (Ap) in Rana Municipality states that he will not anticipate the processing of the application. – But it will be treated politically, he writes in an SMS to news. Stand together on the boycott chairman of the Båsmo & Ytteren school corps says that there is full agreement on a possible boycott among the seven corps. – If one corps does not play, the others will not either. And if one of the corps still plays, everyone should play. We stand together on the requirements, says Teigland. Mo Hornmusikk is a regular feature of the cityscape in Mo i Rana on May 17. Photo: Elise Angermo Fossland / news Like the drum nuts, he thinks the situation that has arisen is broken. – This is the birthday of Norway. This is not something we take lightly, says Teigland. Norwegian Music Council: – Failing the corps Lise Gulbransen is Secretary General of the Norwegian Music Council. She has a great understanding of the corps’ frustration. – If it is true that for several years they have been promised a small sum to play on May 17, then the corps is now failed by the municipality. Then I realize that the corps choose to use the only weapon they have. She states that many corps and others who work with culture in the municipalities experience the same as in Rana. This is done at the same time as the membership of the Norwegian Music Corps Association increased for the fourth year in a row and is now up in 61,125. Lise Gulbransen, Norwegian Music Council – not playing is both sad and dramatic. But if they have been promised support for several years, and yet lined up, I have a great understanding of the reaction. According to the federation’s recent musician survey, 75 percent of youth members responded that the most important thing about participating in the corps is to be with friends. It interprets the association there that the corps is an important part of creating living communities. Corps is an important part of creating living communities. – Now there is pressure on the municipal economy around, and it notices cultural life since culture is not a statutory task. We get many feedback from our members and local advice experiencing cuts in support for their activity. At the same time, the Gulbransen emphasizes that the image is not the same throughout the country. – Some also get increases, but in general, many people know in the music volatility that it is cut in the support, which also applies from the county municipalities. The government has just established a regional cultural fund, where NOK 75 million has been allocated in the first place. They will go to the county municipalities, which manage the money further, and they are intended to go to projects that can strengthen the collaboration between professionals and volunteers. – These fresh funds for cultural life should not lead to cuts locally and regionally. But around the country, there is a fear that the funds will be a sleeping pad for municipalities and county municipalities that are struggling with the economy, says Gulbransen.
