How does its preview earnings compare to other recent releases? What can we infer about audience reception based on the scores of Accountant 2 and Sinners? Could the limited engagement format affect the overall success of Revenge of the Sith? How might Until Dawn compete within the R-rated category against these major titles?

Talk about a blast from the past.

Lucasfilm and Disney’s 20th Anniversary rerelease of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith soared to $3.4 million in Thursday previews ahead of its limited one-week engagement, enough to beat the $2.5 million earned in previews by Ben Affleck’s new action-thriller The Accountant 2 (the $2.5 million includes “tax day” screenings held April 15).

If Revenge of the Sith proves to be a force of nature, the weekend could turn into a three-way race, versus just a contest between Warner Bros.’ Sinners and Amazon MGM Studios’ Accountant 2, both of which are expected to earn $20 million to $25 million.

The rerelease of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace earned $8.7 million on its opening weekend in May 2024, while the rerelease of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi grossed $5.1 million in late April 2023. There were no preview screenings for either of those titles. The big question is how frontloaded Sith is (one rival executive believes the Star Wars pic could indeed approach $20 million).

Many put Ryan Sinners way ahead of those estimates and are certain it will stay atop the chart with $30 million or more. Graced with virtually perfect audience scores and the best reviews of Ryan Coogler‘s already acclaimed career, Sinners has transformed into the rare title that becomes a runaway water-cooler sensation.

On Thursday, Sinners bested the competition with a sizeable $6.1 million for an impressive seven-day domestic cume of $77.5 million. The period supernatural vampire pic starring Michael B. Jordan opened to a better-than-expected $48 million over Easter weekend to topple fellow Warners’ event pic A Minecraft Movie after the former ruled the roost for two consecutive weekends.

The first Accountant, released by Warners, opened to $24.7 million in 2016 on its way to grossing $155.5 million globally and becoming the most-rented digital film in 2017, according to Amazon MGM.

Reuniting Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor, Accountant 2 currently sports a fresh 76 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a rotten 53 percent for the first film. Consumers are far more entranced, judging by the sequel’s current 93 percent audience RT score.

Affleck produced the sequel via his and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity, alongside Lynette Howell Taylor for 51 Entertainment and Mark Williams for Zero Gravity Management. The film made its world premiere at SXSW last month, winning the Audience Award for the Headliners section.

Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, and J.K. Simmons co-star in Accountant 2, which sees Affleck’s character compelled to step in and help solve the murder of an old acquaintance with the help of his estranged brother and a U.S. Treasury agent. Together, they uncover a deadly conspiracy, becoming targets of a ruthless network of killers who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.

Both Accountant 2 and Sinners are R-rated and will compete alongside Revenge of the Sith for male attention, although the latter has the advantage of also playing to families.

Screen Gem and Sony’s new horror offering Until Dawn took in $1 million in Thursday previews for a weekend opening in the single-digit range. It is likewise rated R.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Tops Accountant 2: A Battle of Blockbusters

In the landscape of cinema, few franchises command the reverence and sheer excitement that the "Star Wars" saga does. Among its many installments, "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" stands out not just as a pivotal conclusion to the prequel trilogy but also as a monumental entry within the broader "Star Wars" mythos. Its resurgence in popularity has recently been underscored by its ability to outperform contemporary films, including the highly anticipated "Accountant 2." Let’s explore the reasons behind this triumph and what it signifies in the realm of modern filmmaking.

Nostalgia and Legacy

"Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith," released in 2005, was the climactic chapter of George Lucas’s prequel trilogy. It tells the emotionally charged story of Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader, intertwining themes of loss, betrayal, and the ultimate fall from grace. For many fans, it evokes powerful memories from their childhoods, solidifying its emotional resonance despite mixed critical reception upon its initial release.

In an age where nostalgia plays a significant role in audience engagement, older films have a unique advantage. With multiple generations now having grown up with the "Star Wars" franchise, returning to this iconic tale evokes a sense of familiarity and comfort. The connectivity to the larger "Star Wars" universe, especially with recent developments in Disney’s sequel trilogy and various spin-offs like "The Mandalorian," has breathed new life into older entries. This nostalgia undoubtedly contributes to its resurgence at the box office and streaming platforms.

The Allure of the Galactic Saga

The overwhelming success of "Revenge of the Sith" can partially be attributed to its unique position within the beloved "Star Wars" series. The film culminates in the beloved saga’s lore, presenting pivotal historical moments, such as the establishment of the Galactic Empire and the tragic transformation of one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history: Anakin Skywalker.

The quintessential "Star Wars" elements—epic lightsaber battles, pulse-pounding space battles, and dramatic storytelling—set it apart. Audiences are not only drawn to the spectacular visual effects but also to the emotional depth of the characters. The film’s ability to explore complex themes, such as the nature of power, redemption, and the consequences of choice, adds layers that resonate deeply with viewers.

Competition with Accountant 2

On the other side of the ring, "Accountant 2," the much-anticipated follow-up to the 2016 thriller starring Ben Affleck, had a unique premise that sought to blend elements of action with a suspenseful narrative. This time around, fans expected to see Affleck’s character, Christian Wolff, delving deeper into a world fraught with moral ambiguities and high-stakes scenarios.

While the original "Accountant" was a commercial success, its premise might not have the same widespread appeal compared to the extensive and varied "Star Wars" universe. Despite strong performances and a well-crafted storyline, it has struggled to retain the same level of cultural impact or nostalgia that audiences associate with "Star Wars." The marketing campaign for "Accountant 2" attempted to attract audiences, but the challenges of digging deeper into a gritty world of enigma and action may not be enough to overshadow the enchantment of the galaxy far, far away.

The Impact of Streaming and Renewed Interest

In an era dominated by streaming platforms, films often experience a second life long after their theatrical release. "Revenge of the Sith" has benefited from various platforms offering classic films to new viewers, introducing "Star Wars" to audiences who may have never experienced it on the big screen. This revival fuels conversations online and in fandom communities, allowing the film to gain traction, garner renewed interest, and become a topic of discussion.

Moreover, the era of streaming has allowed both seasoned fans and newcomers to experience "Revenge of the Sith" in a format of their choosing, thus expanding its audience reach. In stark contrast, "Accountant 2’s" potential for cinematic allure has been undermined by a market glutted with similar thriller offerings and evolving viewer preferences that lean towards franchises with established, immersive universes.

Conclusion: The Resilience of a Legend

The triumph of "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" over "Accountant 2" is emblematic of a broader trend within the film industry: the persistent dominance of well-established franchises over new, untested narratives. As cinematic landscapes evolve and audiences become increasingly selective about what they choose to watch, films rooted in well-loved stories—especially iconic series like "Star Wars"—will likely continue to resonate deeply with fans and newcomers alike.

This ongoing love affair with "Star Wars" serves as a testament to the lasting power of storytelling and the strong emotional connections that films can forge. As the galaxy far, far away continues to expand, we can only assume that "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" will remain a treasured gem in the hearts of many, overshadowing newcomers like "Accountant 2" on the path to cinematic greatness.

“Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” has gained significant attention, surpassing “Accountant 2” in various aspects, such as box office performance, fan engagement, and cultural impact. While “Accountant 2” aims to build on the successful elements of its predecessor, it appears to be overshadowed by the iconic legacy and expansive universe of the Star Wars franchise. The unique storytelling, visual effects, and established characters of “Revenge of the Sith” continue to resonate with audiences, reinforcing its position as a standout in cinematic history.

Tm-En-6

What impact does the rerelease of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith have on current box office competition?
