He was replaced by jury member Jeff Russo, Emmy-awarded composer of \u201cFargo,\u201d also credited for \u201cRipley\u201d and \u201cStar Trek: Section 31.\u201d Co-jurors of the main competition remained actors Louise Bourgoin, Lola Due\u00f1as, and C\u00e9sar Domboy, who walked the pink carpet on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Crowd onlookers who expected \u201cThe Agency\u201d stars Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere or the aforementioned Reedus to share a selfie with them were perhaps disappointed, such as a young Thea, in her 20s, who was coming from Nice to have a glimpse of \u201cThe Walking Dead\u201d star and planning to come back with her sister for a screening of \u201cThe Walking Dead: Dead City\u201d Season 2 on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The young French girls and other fans of the AMC spinoff of the flagship zombie show can, however, prepare for a similar adrenaline rush of excitement as Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan Smith, is expected to walk &#8211; very well alive &#8211; the Palais steps today next to creator Scott Gimple. On Thursday, other celebrities filled the pink carpet and paused for photographers, including high-profile national influencers such as Ellie Fy and Mia Fall, dressed in dazzling evening dresses. But the true stars of series creation, screenwriters, were also available in abundance, as were showrunners Beau Willimon (\u201cHouse of Cards\u201d) Soo Hugh (\u201cPachinko\u201d) and David Hadda. The latter, who bagged no less than three wins at last year\u2019s Canneseries (best series, music, high school-drama award) for his colorful family drama \u201cThe Zweiflers,\u201d was extremely happy to be back in Cannes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like coming home, but without the stress, just for the enjoyment,\u201d said the seasoned writer, in town to attend the 40-cohort strong Writers Club. \u201cI\u2019m interested to learn how writers in other countries think and how they approach topics of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The need for creatives to collaborate to stand high and fend for artistic quality, diversity, training, and democratic values in today\u2019s shifting times was underlined by Canneseries president Fleur Pellerin at the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn these times of instability, culture remains our true guiding light; it helps us navigate the sense of chaos and re-invent meaning. As global conflicts arise, and democratic values are challenged, culture stands high as a powerful beacon of freedom and creativity,\u201d she stated, reminding the audience of 2,000 at the Palais\u2019 Grand Auditorium, Canneseries\u2019 own core values of connection, dialogue, and artistic ambition. \u201cThe festival is meant to create bridges,\u201d she insisted.<\/p>\n<p>Boasting about Canneseries\u2019 revamped industry event unspooling April 25-27, Pellerin said the program reflects the Industry Days\u2019 ambitions in terms of \u201csynergies, exchange of ideas and the emergence of new projects.\u201d The former French Culture Minister also talked AI and its challenge to human beings in the creative process.<\/p>\n<p>Picking up on Pellerin\u2019s thoughts about AI, Cannes mayor David Lisnard underlined the immense opportunities in the field. \u201cWe are just in the ice age of AI,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>The politician took a chance to announce that next year, Canneseries will host the World AI Film Festival, which successfully launched earlier this year in Nice, with more than 10,000 participants. \u201cTogether with Charles Ange Gin\u00e9sy (President of the Alpes-Maritimes Department and the Maison de l\u2019intelligence artificielle (House of AI), we share the same vision and have agreed to stage the WAIFF during Canneseries next year.
