For director Hwang, the project began with a news article shared by Hive Media Corp. CEO Kim Won-kuk in 2021. \u201cThe term \u2018Yadang\u2019 mentioned in the article referred to someone operating on the border between legality and illegality, which struck me as a compelling subject for a film,\u201d Hwang tells Variety<\/em>. \u201cAt the same time, it was becoming clear that Korea could no longer be considered a drug-free nation. I wanted to raise awareness about the dangers and severity of drug crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

That element of discovery resonates with star Kang Ha-neul as well. \u201cThe biggest reason [I took the role] was definitely the script \u2013 it was tight and fast-paced. Also, \u2018Yadang\u2019 was something I would\u2019ve never known about if I hadn\u2019t read this script,\u201d the actor explains. \u201cIt struck me that if I didn\u2019t know this world existed, most audiences probably wouldn\u2019t either. That\u2019s what drew me to the project \u2013 I thought it would be fascinating to introduce viewers to these characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same time, I didn\u2019t want to sugarcoat his actions or make them seem noble,\u201d Kang says. \u201cSo I focused on portraying the \u2018gray zone\u2019 as carefully and honestly as I could.\u201d<\/p>\n

To build authenticity, Hwang immersed his cast in research about real yadangs. \u201cI read interviews and writings from real Yadangs (which were materials the director had compiled),\u201d Kang notes. \u201cThat\u2019s when I realized these individuals operate with complete confidence, like they\u2019re untouchable \u2013 even if they get caught, they don\u2019t believe anyone can touch them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film pairs Kang with \u201cExhuma\u201d star Yoo Hai-jin and \u201cThe World of the Married\u201d actor Park Hae-joon, creating a triangle of tension between informant, prosecutor, and detective. \u201cSince drug enforcement in Korea falls under the jurisdiction of both police and prosecutors, it was natural for the story to include a Yadang, a prosecutor, and a detective,\u201d Hwang explains.<\/p>\n

Action sequences received meticulous attention under martial arts director Heo Myeong-haeng. \u201cWe referenced footage of actual drug busts and takedowns by narcotics officers and tried to replicate that realism on camera,\u201d says Hwang. \u201cWe also reflected the characters\u2019 personalities through their movements, enhancing their individuality.\u201d<\/p>\n

One standout sequence features a slippery hand-to-hand combat scene among wriggling eels. \u201cThis not only added fresh entertainment value but also heightened realism through restricted movement and visceral impacts,\u201d the director adds.<\/p>\n

Hwang views the film as part of Korea\u2019s evolving crime genre lineage. \u201cKorean crime-action films \u2013 starting with \u2018No. 3\u2019 (1997), and continuing through \u2018The Unjust\u2019 (2010), \u2018Inside Men\u2019 (2015), and \u2018Asura: The City of Madness\u2019 (2016) \u2013 have developed a unique noir style where prosecutors, police, the media, gangsters, and informants all get entangled.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Kang, whose career has spanned from romantic comedies to historical dramas before recent turns in \u201cSquid Game 2\u201d and now \u201cYadang,\u201d the pivot to more intense roles isn\u2019t calculated. \u201cI\u2019ve never chosen a project to shape or shift my image in any way. I just pick stories that I find genuinely interesting,\u201d he says. \u201cSo the connection between \u2018Squid Game\u2019 and \u2018Yadang: The Snitch\u2019 is totally coincidental.
