After the first matches, it seems that Ødegaard is a bigger player, a bigger personality and a bigger character, says former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand to the Daily Mail. Not everyone was equally convinced that the midfielder would cope with the responsibility Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta gave him as captain this season. Ferdinand was among those who spoke critically of the decision. When Ødegaard was made captain, Ferdinand said the following to his own YouTube channel: – The captaincy is a heavy burden to carry. We may see another Ødegaard this season. – Become a bigger personality With the result in hand, Ferdinand threw his arms in the air and admitted that he was wrong. – I said that the captain’s armband could be heavy to wear. I said it could be, there was a chance for it. Some players become different when they get the captain’s armband. But he has started the season fantastically. As a type of player, I really like Ødegaard, and last season was fantastic, says Ferdinand. Rio Ferdinand admits that he had his doubts whether Ødegaard would manage to get the captain’s role on a permanent basis. Photo: David Klein / Reuters The old stoppage star believes Ødegaard is fully beginning to show why he was one of the most sought-after youngsters in the world as a 15-year-old. Against Fulham at the weekend, the Norwegian national team captain scored his third goal of the season, and was a strong contributor to Arsenal taking their fourth straight league win in as many games and topping the Premier League table. After the 2-1 win, Ødegaard was voted the best on the pitch by Arsenal’s supporters and Sky Sports, and in addition he was later named in the team for the round by both the BBC and WhoScored. “A true demonstration of leadership” Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was asked after the match what he thinks Ødegaard is contributing to the league leaders right now. – Impact. And that, in difficult times, he takes the ball and makes things happen. That is what he has done today, said Arteta after the victory against Fulham. Martin Ødegaard enjoys great trust from Mikel Arteta. Photo: GLYN KIRK / AFP In the newspapers, the Norwegian is praised for his leadership skills. The website Football London thinks Ødegaard showed “a true demonstration of leadership”. Ødegaard told the BBC that he was enjoying his managerial responsibilities at Arsenal. – I feel more confident and calmer on the track, so I try to use it in a good way and do the best for the team. I think everyone here is expected to take a leadership role, even if you are young, says Ødegaard to the BBC. – A stroke of genius Current Sky Sports expert Paul Merson has over 300 games for Arsenal and still follows the club closely. Paul Merson has allowed himself to be impressed by Ødegaard. Photo: ADRIAN DENNIS / AFP In a column for Sky Sports, Merson writes that he has allowed himself to be greatly impressed by what the Norwegian has achieved this season since he was given the captain’s armband by Arteta. – It has been a very good start to Martin Ødegaard’s time as captain. They paid 35 million pounds to Real Madrid for him, which is hardly anything. He makes things happen, and when you are able to do that, that you turned good play into goals and goal-scoring passes, that’s when people start to notice. That is what he has done, and it has been a stroke of genius to give him the captain’s armband, Merson believes. Although the Sky Sports expert is full of praise for Ødegaard, he points out that it is still early in the season. – We have to see what happens when things don’t go as well with the team, and he doesn’t play as well himself. Will he be able to bring the team with him in the same way? But right now he is doing very well. For 35 million pounds, what he does is absolutely incredible, says Merson. Martin Ødegaard has settled in well as captain at Arsenal. Photo: ANDREW COULDRIDGE / Reuters – How could Madrid let Ødegaard go? To Talksport after the match at the weekend, former Premier League player and current expert Tony Cascarino drew parallels to Kevin De Bruyne. Cascarino believes Ødegaard was the player who really stood out. In fact, the Norwegian was so good that Gary Lineker, one of the most respected football voices on the ball island, asked a rhetorical question about what Real Madrid were thinking when they chose to sell him to Arsenal in a permanent deal. – How could Madrid let Ødegaard go when they have Modric and Kroos, who are at the end of their careers, he said in the BBC program Match of the Day. Respect for the Norwegian in the Premier League is increasing, no doubt about it. Arsenal’s next game will be played on Wednesday evening at home against Aston Villa in the Premier League. There, most expect the red shirts to take their fifth straight league win against Steven Gerrard’s team, who have opened the season with three losses in the first four games.

ttn-69

– Either you are burdened by being captain, or it makes you grow and get better.
