Things that adults fix in everyday life, you now have to handle yourself. Dinner, laundry, shopping and not least getting up in time to make it to the first class. But all this does not scare the 17-year-old who lives in a dormitory at Fauske in Nordland. – I think it’s quite fun to live away. After all, I get to try things that the “nut” does every day that I now have to do myself. Is there then a connection between living away and not finishing upper secondary school? Nordland County Council wanted to find out and launched an investigation. Every sixth pupil drops out Nordland has for many years, along with Troms and Finnmark, been at the top of the statistics on young people who drop out of school. Last school year, one in six pupils dropped out of the county, and even more quit the vocational courses. The county mainly consists of district municipalities and a good number of pupils live away, due to the long travel distance between home and school. With smaller youth cohorts, many classes have been closed in recent years. Thinks the report is a myth buster The survey was carried out by Menon Economics, and shows that people living away from home complete the same degree as those who live at home and that they also get just as good grades. The majority of pupils who have responded to the survey enjoy school well or very well. The proportion stating this is somewhat higher among students living at home, but the proportion is also high for those living away from home, the report states. – Our residents enjoy the school. And the other thing we found out is that they complete their education, says county councilor for education Elin Dahlseng Eide. Are you surprised that the dormitory residents do not drop out more than those who live at home? – I am very happy that it is exactly like this. It’s kind of a mythbuster. Elin Dahlseng Eide, county council for education in Nordland. Here she is visiting the line for building and construction subjects at Fauske. The report also shows that not everyone is as well off as a resident: “This may apply, for example, to students who rent dormitories privately and where family finances, the market for dormitories (including high rental prices) means that living conditions can be demanding.” Was afraid he would sit inside a lot And not everyone is happy with the state of things for those who have to live in dormitories. Recently, news reported that students receive NOK 4,979 when they have to move to go to school. Leader of the Student Organization Aslak Berntsen Husby believes that residents should receive NOK 12,000 a month to be able to pay rent, food, leisure activities and travel home. 17-year-old Sigurd Hjelle is from Kleiva in Sortland municipality, several hours’ journey from Fauske. There he attends Arbeidsmaskiner VG2. – I was afraid that I would spend a lot of time in the dormitory, but I don’t think that will happen, he says. And adds: – I have gotten to know many people, there are many activities with the school. Many of those who take building and construction subjects at Fauske are non-residents. Photo: Daniel Hong Hansen \/ news Food is the best attraction At Fauske upper secondary school, they offer activities for the residents in the afternoons and free meals. – It probably requires more from the school in relation to being close to and following them closely. It’s not just being 16 and moving away from home, says Marita Martinussen, head of department at Fauske upper secondary school. The county council says the work to reduce the drop-out rate continues. – We are strengthening our student and apprentice service. Intensive courses and professional follow-up and takes them in smaller groups to do the follow-up that is necessary. Surprised Per Egil Mjaavatn, researcher at the institute for pedagogy and lifelong learning at NTNU, says he is a little surprised by the findings in the report. – I have not done research specifically on people living away from home. But in general I can say that we have very clear data that loneliness is the most important factor for dropping out of upper secondary school. Per Egil Mjaavatn, Department of Pedagogy and Lifelong Learning, NTNU Photo: NTNU Affecting mental health Mjaavatn says that they have followed 3,000 students over three years at upper secondary school. And at all grade levels, the biggest factors for dropping out are that students feel alone and lack a network. – I would probably have expected a different result than what they got here. We know from good data that being torn from one’s home network affects mental health. And mental health and loneliness influence thoughts about leaving school. In the dormitory he has to arrange what the nut does at home. Photo: Daniel Hong Hansen \/ news Sigurd Hjelle feels confident that he will be able to complete his years at upper secondary school as a resident. – Even if those who live at home have parents who kick their ass. The student and apprentice service here is very good at catching up with you if you start to show signs that you are about to drop out. So I don’t think that will be a problem at all.
\n

\n
ttn-69 <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
It is easy to imagine that it is not easy to move to a dormitory when you are 16 or 17 years old.
