What inspired the design of this scene? How was the challenging pool set piece executed during filming? In what ways does Charles Heller’s character evolve throughout the movie? What underlying themes does Hawes suggest contribute to the popularity of spy thrillers in contemporary cinema?

New fear unlocked.

“Even looking into it, you would never get me into it,” James Hawes, director of The Amateur, told The Hollywood Reporter about that terrifying pool-collapse moment in the film at last week’s premiere.

During the scene, Rami Malek‘s character, Charles Heller, a CIA decoder, confronts one of the men involved in the murder of his wife, Sarah (played by Rachel Brosnahan), on top of a pool based in Madrid. As Charles isn’t getting the answer he needs about who actually pulled the trigger on his wife, he pulls the trigger on the remote, which shatters the pool’s glass floor, and Mishka Blazhic (Marc Rissmann) falls to his death.

“The idea is inspired in the 1981 novel by a giant aquarium with people swimming in it, and so we’ve taken that and transitioned it and developed it into a skytop pool,” Hawes said. He added how the scene required the team to build “a life-size section of it in the studio so that we could explode it and drop it.” However, since it was also shot on location, Hawes reiterates that “It’s not just all CGI” and “there’s a fair bit of real effects in there.”

The pool, which actually exists in London, at the Embassy Gardens, drew some obstacles for the creative team, such as the constant moving of locations. They also had to secure permission from the Embassy to use drones for the sequence.

“That was our first and second day of shooting,” Dan Wilson, a producer on the film, told THR about the scene. “For this movie, it was challenging because we have that kind of mix of tricky big set pieces, the pool being the biggest, but also a really kind of heavy location-driven show every single day pretty much we’re moving on to the location. … Adding those set pieces like the pool are really complicated, take time to work out. It was tricky but it was a blast to shoot that.”

However, the scene that the “actual breaking of the pool that you see where the guy goes down, that was one shot,” Wilson continued. “We didn’t want to re-set that.”

While the sequence added to Charles’ mission of avenging his deceased wife, it’s not until the end that Charles gets his real revenge with the attackers — and he didn’t need to kill Schiller to do so. Instead, he sets them up to be arrested.

Charles’ growth throughout the film begins with him as a “geek” who is “scared to go behind the wheel of his own car,” Hawes described. But through the skills he’s gained, at the end of the film, “he takes to the skies.”

“He’s free. He’s become a new man. That is a kind of liberation,” Hawes continued. “It’s the kind of justice and it’s what his wife would have wanted for him.”

While spy thrillers have been all the rage in recent years with Black Doves, The Day of the Jackal, and Slow Horses (which Hawes also directed), Hawes spoke about why he believes the genre sparks such an interest with audiences.

“Especially in unstable times, people look to see what happens. Most spy thrillers turn the world upside down. They invert the world, and they throw our hero into a world that should be normal but where everything black is turned white and vice versa,” he said. “Therefore, it’s something about the world we live in. We love the idea of a single hero thrown into that kind of danger and having to cope with it.”

The Amateur is now out in theaters.

The Amateur Team on Pool Collapse Scene: A Transformative Ending

In an era where professionalism often overshadows the spirit of community and camaraderie, a small, amateur team of volunteers emerged as an unexpected beacon of hope in the wake of a shocking pool collapse incident that rattled a local community. This story encapsulates the power of unity, resilience, and the transformative impact of collective action in the face of adversity.

The Incident

The incident occurred on a fateful Saturday during an annual community event at the local recreation center, where families gathered to enjoy a day of fun and leisure. What was meant to be a day filled with joy took a tragic turn when a structural failure led to a sudden collapse of the pool deck, sending water and debris cascading into the depths below. Panic erupted as onlookers rushed to help, but the chaos of the moment left many stunned and unsure of how to act.

In the hours that followed, emergency services responded swiftly, but it was a nearby group of amateur community organizers, dubbed "The Amateur Team," that truly exemplified the spirit of heroism during this traumatic episode. This diverse ensemble included neighborhood youth leaders, seasoned volunteers from various non-profit organizations, and even a few enthusiastic local artists. United by the desire to make a difference, they quickly set aside their personal plans to offer whatever help they could.

Response in Real Time

As first responders worked to stabilize the scene and begin the recovery operation, the Amateur Team sprang into action. Their immediate goal was triaging those affected, providing comfort to victims, and ensuring that the panic surrounding the event was mitigated through organized responses. The team members split up into groups: some tended to injured individuals while others managed the influx of worried families seeking updates about their loved ones.

Their grassroots approach proved indispensable. While professionals worked meticulously to assess the structural damage and secure the area, this group found ways to organize volunteer support. They created a makeshift command center where community members could check in, offer assistance, or provide food and water to those waiting for news. They even coordinated with local businesses to secure donations, aiming to sustain the wellbeing of both victims and first responders.

Transformative Impact

As hours turned into days, and investigations into the collapse began, the Amateur Team’s efforts showcased the community’s remarkable resilience. Local media caught wind of their work, and the narrative quickly shifted from one of despair to that of inspiration. The once overshadowed group of volunteers transformed into local heroes. Their selflessness drew praise, but it wasn’t just about the recognition. What emerged from the rubble of that tragic day was a deeper sense of belonging and community solidarity.

They started organizing forums to discuss not only the incident’s aftermath but also long-term solutions for community safety. With the wounds of the event still fresh, the Amateur Team became advocates for rebuilding—not just the physical structure of the pool but also the functionality of community ties that seemed to have frayed.

Bridging Divides

One pivotal outcome of the Amateur Team’s initiative was the creation of spaces for dialogue among different community factions, encouraging the involvement of local government officials, structural engineers, and residents alike. The team included voices from the youth, the elderly, artisans, and those who often felt marginalized, creating a canvas of representation that had not been seen in the local governance before.

With shared stories, they laid out plans for a more inclusive community structure, ensuring that safety measures were prioritized in every future community event. The amateur team’s collaborative efforts culminated in the establishment of a Community Safety Council, where decisions regarding public spaces would be made with significant input from local citizens.

A New Beginning

The tragedy of the pool collapse served as a catalyst for change. The Amateur Team’s transformative impact continued long after the incident, fostering a renewed sense of agency among community members. They turned devastation into motivation, leading initiatives that focused on recreational safety, community engagement, and infrastructural improvements.

By embracing both the tragedy and the aftermath, they illuminated the notion that even in the face of calamity, ordinary people could come together to effect extraordinary change. This story of the Amateur Team became a cherished narrative within the community, a testament to the strength found in unity.

Conclusion

What began as a disastrous day marked by chaos and fear evolved into a movement of resilience and restoration. The Amateur Team on the pool collapse scene not only rescued lives but inspired a wave of grassroots activism that fostered dialogue, safety, and a sense of community that would grow far beyond the confines of the local rec center. Their story is a reminder that beneath the surface, the true strength of a community lies in its ability to unite, heal, and thrive in the aftermath of crisis.

The pool collapse scene is a pivotal moment in “The Amateur,” capturing the essence of the characters’ struggles and growth. As the seemingly peaceful day turns into chaos, the unexpected collapse serves as a metaphor for the fragility of their lives and relationships.

The aftermath becomes a transformative experience for the characters involved. Each reacts differently to the crisis, revealing previously hidden aspects of their personalities. Some rise to the occasion, showcasing resilience and leadership, while others falter, overwhelmed by the reality of their circumstances.

This moment acts as a catalyst for change. The characters are forced to confront their fears, insecurities, and the consequences of their past decisions. As they navigate the turmoil, they find strength in one another, forging deeper connections that alter their trajectories.

In the end, the pool collapse is not just a physical event but a symbolic awakening for the characters. It underscores the importance of community, the power of vulnerability, and the possibility of redemption. The scene resonates long after it concludes, leaving the audience reflecting on the fragility of life and the unexpected paths that lead to growth and transformation.

Tm-En-6

What key moment in the film ‘The Amateur’ does director James Hawes highlight regarding the pool collapse scene?
