It is expected that the eight parties sitting in the Riksdag now will also do so after the election: Socialist block: Social Democrats (S). The Swedish equivalent of the Labor Party. in Norway. The Green Party (MP). Equivalent to MDG in Norway. Previously sat in government with the Social Democrats Vänsterpartiet (V). Very left-wing party. Much like SV and Rødt in Norway. Bourgeois bloc: Moderates (M). The Swedish equivalent of the Right in Norway. The Christian Democrats (KD). Very similar to KrF in Norway. Close collaboration with the Moderates for years. The Liberals (L). Much like the Norwegian Left. Bourgeois party with a social liberal profile. POSTERS: The election posters are in place all over Stockholm. Here from Sergels torg, right in the city centre. Photo: FREDRIK PERSSON / AFP Center Center Party (C). Former peasant party. Often compared to the Center Party in Norway. But among EU supporters and with a clearer environmental profile. Block-independent Swedish Democrats (SD). Nationalist and social conservative party. Will most likely become part of a possible bourgeois government’s parliamentary basis. What is the most important election campaign issue? For over ten years, gang crime, violence and serious violence have been a headache for Swedish politicians. In 2021, there were 330 shooting incidents with a total of 46 people killed in Sweden. In the last four years, there have been just over 44 murders with firearms in Sweden on average annually. Most of the murders are gang-related. But still creates fear and anxiety. Domestic political commentator, Mats Knutson, in SVT believes it is a clear advantage for the bourgeois whose crime characterizes the election campaign. Riots: In May 2013 there were large riots in Husby, a district a little north of Stockholm. The challenges Sweden has with gang crime are expected to be a significant part of the election campaign. Photo: Fredrik Sandberg / NTB scanpix – Absolutely. The Moderates in particular have great confidence in that issue. Moreover, it is a burden for the Social Democrats. they have had government power since 2014. During this period, crime and violence have increased, he says. When other matters become important? There are three more issues that are highlighted, if you ask Swedish commentators. Health policy Price rise and energy crisis The Friskoleloven The corona pandemic has made the shortage in the number of hospital beds in Sweden very clear. Overload and hard-pressed employees became everyday life. How this is to be resolved will be a recurring question in the election campaign. HEALTH CRISIS: The corona pandemic was a wake-up call for many Swedes. The conditions in the country’s healthcare system are not up to par, many believe. Who has the best recipe? Photo: Gunnar Bratthammer Electricity and petrol prices are also high in Sweden. The same applies to food. Many Swedes have had their purchasing power greatly reduced in recent months. They call for action. The parties talk more about how to avoid an energy crisis in the future. Among other things, COMMENTATOR: Mats Knutson in SVT takes a particularly bourgeois side, advocating for using more nuclear power. The socialist parties will also remove the possibility for private joint-stock companies to withdraw profits from the operation of schools in Sweden. – There does not seem to be a majority to change this law. Both the bourgeois and the Sweden Democrats say no, explains Knutson in SVT. He still believes that there may be stricter requirements for the operation of the independent schools. Blue. with requirements for the number of students per teacher. Why are the Sweden Democrats in the heat? It is therefore only four years since “everything” in Swedish politics was about ensuring that the Sweden Democrats were given no opportunity to influence. What actually happened? LOVED AND HATED: The Sweden Democrats are unpalatable to some, but the party has around 20% support in opinion polls. In recent years, they have come more into the heat of Swedish politics. Photo: Fredrik Sandberg/TT / NTB One thing is that the party has spent the last few years expelling members who are proven to have had links to the Nazi milieu. Their policies are also more similar to the other parties now. – The Sweden Democrats are still controversial among large groups of voters. But the Moderates want government power. The only way they can achieve that is through SD’s mandates in the Riksdag, says Knutson. He also highlights the NATO debate this spring. It may have contributed to the party becoming more “edible” – They have successively changed. The SD were staunch opponents of Nato but did exactly as the Social Democrats did, changing their views because of the war in Ukraine. – In addition, several of the larger parties, such as the Social Democrats and the Moderates, have advocated for Sweden to accept fewer immigrants. Then the Sweden Democrats’ point of view in that field does not appear as extreme or unique. Can the Sweden Democrats become the biggest party in Sweden? It is expected that the large masses of voters have “settled” in Sweden by now, but that there will still be stragglers who jump off the fence. In an opinion poll three weeks before the election, the Sweden Democrats make a big splash and leapfrog the Moderates. JUBEL: Many predict that the Sweden Democrats will once again make a good choice in Sweden. Photo: Anders Wiklund/TT / NTB Scanpix There are still 7–8 percentage points up for the Social Democrats. Ulf Kristersson, who is the leader and prime ministerial candidate for the Moderates, has nevertheless clearly said that it is not appropriate for a possible bourgeois government to be led by the Sweden Democrats. The question is whether other demands they can make if they do not get a place in the government. Has the Center Party changed sides? The Center Party has collaborated with both the socialist and bourgeois sides of Swedish politics. They were part of the “alliance”, which formed the basis for Fredrik Reinfeld from the Moderates’ prime ministerial period from 2006 to 2014. WANTS A CENTER GOVERNMENT: Annie Lööf, who leads the Center Party, has proposed a government with them, the Social Democrats and the Moderates together. Few experts believe that will be possible. Photo: Claudio Bresciani/TT / Claudio Bresciani/TT But after the election in 2018, they and the Liberals agreed to support Stefan Löfven as prime minister over Ulf Kristersson on the grounds that they wanted to ensure that the Sweden Democrats had no influence in Swedish politics. Now party leader Annie Lööf has pointed to Magdalena Andersson as prime minister and opened up about sitting in government with the Social Democrats. But she says at the same time that she would rather point to Ulf Kristersson, if it didn’t mean giving the Sweden Democrats influence at the same time. How does Sweden elect a prime minister? 349 representatives are elected to the Riksdag. The blocking threshold is 4% and a party must end up above it to get a seat in the Riksdag. A proposal that a person be elected prime minister is adopted if there is not a majority who votes against the proposal. That is why the term is often used that a party “releases” someone as prime minister. That is, they vote blank or abstain from voting. RIKSDAGEN: there are a total of 349 seats in the Swedish Riksdag. Eight parties sit there today, the Social Democrats are now the largest party and are expected to remain so after the election. But they can still lose the post of prime minister to the Moderates. Photo: Erik Simander/TT / NTB As a rule, it is a prime minister candidate’s party and possibly government parties that vote “for” a prime minister candidate. The support parties vote blank (or yellow), i.e. “let go” of a prime minister. The opponents vote “against”. If no more than 174 representatives vote “against”, then the proposed Prime Minister is elected. Who will be prime minister after the election? There are actually two candidates for that. Magdalena Andersson from the Social Democrats can remain in office. But she is challenged by the leader of the right-wing party Moderaterna, Ulf Kristersson. After the previous Prime Minister Stefan Löfven from the same party as Andersson resigned last autumn, the party has risen in the opinion polls. Magdalena Andersson is described by commentators as a more solution-oriented and efficient prime minister. Photo: Henrik Montgomery/TT / AP Ulf Kristersson has struggled a bit in the opinion polls leading up to the election campaign. Political commentators point out that the Moderates and the Sweden Democrats are fighting for many of the same voters, especially when it comes to those concerned with immigration and the fight against crime.

ttn-69

Which parties are there in Sweden?
