The gig, dubbed \u201cAn Evening With Elton John & Brandi Carlile,\u201d mixed a showcase of songs featured on their highly anticipated collaborative album Who Believes in Angels?<\/em> with some of their respective greatest hits after the duo sat down to discuss their friendship and more with interviewer Dan Levy.<\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging conversation, John discussed among other things LGBTQIA+ rights, wanting to support younger artists (he name-checked such recent success stories as Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, and Sabrina Carpenter), how he owns an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 pairs of sunglasses, how he hopes the joint album will help Carlile reach a broader global audience, how he struggled getting started on their album due to the Israel-Gaza situation, and what he wants his gravestone to read.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn my tombstone, I want nothing to do with Crocodile fucking Rock,\u201d the legendary music star shared. \u201cI just want it to say \u2018He was a great dad\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Discussing how he felt down about war, John told the audience of his complicated feelings saying \u201cit doesn\u2019t seem right to be trying to make a record when this horrible stuff is going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carlile said she leaned in musically. \u201cI wrote a song called \u2018A Little Light\u2019,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd the first verse of \u2018A Little Light\u2019 is basically what Elton said, and then my verse is what I wish I\u2019d said, but like most things, I found it easier to say to Elton in song.\u201d<\/p>\n

He felt inspired. \u201cBrandi just reminded me that I\u2019m a musician,\u201d John recalled. \u201cAll I can do to heal anything is put music out to the world and bring people together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked by Levy about the recent pushback against LGBTQIA+ rights, John said that \u201cit\u2019s tough out there, but these things will pass. These things shall pass.\u201d<\/p>\n

The star also emphasized his take on making political statements. \u201cI cannot speak out about governments. I\u2019m a diplomat. If I speak out about governments, then what\u2019s going to happen to the AIDS money? What\u2019s going to happen to PEPFAR [The U.S. President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief]? I\u2019ve got people\u2019s lives at stake. I have an AIDS foundation that depends on money, and I will go there and fight for it as much as I can,\u201d John said. \u201cBut I cannot go out and say \u2018You\u2019re an asshole. You\u2019re an asshole.\u2019 That\u2019s not what it\u2019s about. You have to negotiate. You have to play the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Famous faces spotted in the audience included The Rolling Stones\u2019 Ron Wood and ABBA\u2019s Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus.<\/p>\n

John who had disclosed last year that he was dealing with a severe eye infection defied his age with his performance, while audience members not previously familiar with Carlile\u2019s work were gushing about her.<\/p>\n

The two performed songs from their upcoming album such as \u201cLittle Richard\u2019s Bible,\u201d with John calling the late legend one of his heroes. They also played \u201cSwing for the Fences\u201d \u2014 an encouragement anthem for the LGBTQIA+ community released earlier this month \u2014 along with the ballad \u201cYou Without Me,\u201d which Carlile shared was inspired by her experience with her daughters. They also performed the title track \u201cWho Believes in Angels?,\u201d which was released earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Carlile played some of her classics such as \u201cThe Joke\u201d and \u201cThe Story.\u201d She also joined John in performing some of his all-time greats, such as \u201cI Guess That\u2019s Why They Call It the Blues\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The audience was also treated to the likes of \u201cTiny Dancer,\u201d \u201cYour Song,\u201d and \u201cBennie and the Jets\u201d from John\u2019s repertoire. The two closed the night around 10 p.m. with evergreen \u201cI\u2019m Still Standing,\u201d to which the whole crowd grooved along enthusiastically before sending the stars off with a huge ovation.<\/p>\n

Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Andrew Watt, John\u2019s longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin contributed to Who Believes in Angels?<\/em>, which will release April 4 through Interscope. It was also backed by legendary musicians Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pino Palladino, and Josh Klinghoffer. Watt, Smith, Klinghoffer, and long-time Carlile collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth joined the duo on the London stage Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis record was one of the toughest I\u2019ve ever made, but it was also one of the greatest musical experiences of my life,\u201d John said in unveiling the album. \u201cWho Believes In Angels?<\/em> feels like going into another era, and I\u2019m pushing the door open to come into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s special event with John and Carlile will be available to Paramount+ subscribers, with CBS set to air a one-hour special on the event on April 6, and ITV in the U.K. on April 19.<\/p>\n
