Steven Spielberg had wanted to use the melodrama to say the genocide of the Jews in Schindler’s list (1993). This time there is a goal that is both less terrible – rather than trying to represent evil, it is only a question of facing the moral dilemma posed by democracies the fight against terrorism – and more elusive.

Nourished by memories that the filmmaker has kept from the hostage -taking and the assassination of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games, Munich is a film that is advancing under the weight of history. This responsibility that the filmmaker has taken is overwhelming. The first victim of this overload is the ease, however natural of Spielberg to make cinema.

From the funny intrusion of the Palestinian commando in the Olympic village to the final massacre – Munich Take up the thesis that the hostages died because of the Palestinians, while other historians believe that they are rather dead under the bullets of the German police -, the filmmaker divides the drama and makes it the permanent reference of the history which takes place.

Spy cinema

This story is that of Avner (Eric Bana), the bodyguard of the Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, propelled chief of a commando dedicated to the elimination of Palestinian officials of the attack. The preparations for the first assassination of a Palestinian official, the poet Wael Zwaiter, are described in the tense style specific to the spy cinema. The murder itself is only a sordid climax which throws a first light on the nature of the task entrusted to Avner and his comrades. The doubt, not on the legitimacy of the goal (preserve the security of Israel) but on that of the means, gradually undermines the spirits and the work of the commando.

Spielberg does not turn the back to the delights of action cinema, and the film is disjointed between rather fun sequences and more theatrical moments. This obstinacy not to let go and the desire to support ideas are only episodically supported by the faculty to stage anxieties and questions. And there is ultimately more beauty in the director’s will than in the gesture he ended up accomplishing.

Read also | Article reserved for our subscribers “September 5”: a television team in the heart of the Munich tragedy

   Read later

Munichfilm by Steven Spielberg (EU, 2005, 150 min).
