Answers to Lars Nehru Sand In a comment in news, Lars Nehru Sand writes that SV’s national meeting is unable to prioritize in a new Norwegian reality where we will struggle more to find people than money. The policy’s response to people’s problems should never be to give up. It is wrong that SV is unable to prioritize, but there is no automaticity that prioritization is about choosing some challenges in favor of anyone else. On the contrary, we will listen to several alarms at the same time. We will listen when nurses sound an alarm about unjustifiable staffing in nursing homes and when union representatives and parents sound an alarm about staffing crisis in kindergartens. For what else should the answer be? That the elderly get to wait while we prioritize good skilled workers for our smallest, or that parents have to go down into the percentage of positions and take greater responsibility for their children during the core time? My parents were young at a time when Einar Gerhardsen stated that “no one should get cake until everyone has got bread”. Large social welfare reforms should build a better society for everyone. I grew up in a society with relatively small differences. With strong fellowship. Important rights fought from the labor movement. This is a legacy we build on when we strengthen the welfare, at a time when the right -wing side will reduce public welfare and community. Therefore, we have to find room for both: both solve people’s everyday problems whether in kindergarten or in the nursing home, while prioritizing even harder in new Norwegian and security policy reality. We will ensure good, public welfare for future generations, we must solve more staffing crises at the same time. And yes, it means that we also solve the staffing rain. We are getting more and more older and fewer in working age. There is no endless number of warm hands and wise heads to solve all society’s tasks in health, care and upbringing, but it does not require us to prioritize one sector over another. It is about prioritizing how we solve the staffing calculation. If we are to get the staffing rain to go up, we have to do two things. First, we must recruit more people to work in health, care and upbringing. Equally important is that we manage to keep more staff who already work in kindergartens or nursing homes than we do today. We have to create good jobs where people enjoy work and not quit because the load becomes too great. We have to reduce the proportion who work part -time. We need to ensure that nurses work with patient care and do not spend time on beds. And we have to stop wasting money on scams, private solutions that in the long run will present us much greater challenges with staffing in the long run. Nehru Sand’s staffing calculation is an even greater challenge for the parties on the right side. At a time when the public is increasingly tightening, where we expect people to be more accessible and work longer guards, it is no wonder that many choose to work for temporary agencies or in wellness clinics with normal working hours 9-16 and good wages. But the consequence of this is brutal: We ensure welfare for a few and weaken staffing in the public sector. What the right side does is ensure welfare for those who can buy themselves in the health queue or pay for expensive nursing homes from their own wallet. In the same way, we will see that if the elderly care, or the offer to our most vulnerable children is not good enough in the public, more (often ladies) will choose to be more at home to ensure that their loved ones get the offer they so badly need. In this staffing calculation it is about prioritization – if we have enough people in public, it must be okay to work there. Security in a unsafe time SV has always driven changes that have created debate and have been counterfeit, but since become public ownership. SV will continue to do, whether it is about solving the staffing crisis in the kindergartens of our children or securing enough people who also enjoy working in the nursing homes. Norway needs a strong SV that has high ambitions to solve the challenges people know on every single day. SV has taken the role of community builder in Norwegian politics. It is SV who drives social welfare reforms. It gives people security. SV’s response to people’s everyday problems will never be to give up because the challenges are too great to be solved. For SV, staffing challenges will only provide more motivation to ensure that those who do the important job in welfare do not get more cuts, but rather more colleagues.
