The company says the purchase is crucial for future operation of the planned copper mines. With this, they get most of the infrastructure in place. Hammerfest’s mayor Terje Rogde (H) says the news is an important milestone. But the environmental movement believes the most important problems remain: Pollution with heavy metals in a protected salmon fjord and major consequences for reindeer husbandry. Helene Sofie Smit, central board member of Nature and Youth, says they are ready for new actions. – We follow and are ready to take action at the moment they start work. So they just know, everyone who is considering putting their money into this project, that we have stopped for over 20 years. And we can continue to achieve that. Photo: Ksenia Novikova / news Buy old mining area There was operation in Repparfjord copper mines in the years 1972–1978. Today, Øyen has industrial areas for large ships, an operational crushed mill, several buildings and a large conveyor belt system, according to a press release from the company Blue Moon. The investment is NOK 180 million, according to the press release. Canadian Blue Moon Metals took over Nussir in November. The company now writes that they have purchased all shares in Repparfjord Eiendom AS from Wergeland Eigedom AS. The settlement takes place in the form of shares in Blue Moon and a cash payment of 7.2 million US dollars (NOK 77.4 million at today’s rate). Nussir-top Øystein Rushfeldt has not wanted to interview this case today. The CEO of Blue Moon Metals, Christian Kargl-Simard, writes in an SMS that the company does not want to comment on the matter and refers to the press release. Nature conservation: Continued problem The environmental movement, on the other hand, is very talkative after the news became known. Truls Gulowsen in the Nature Conservation Association has followed the mining plans in the Repparfjord closely. He has questioned Nussir’s seriousness, and thinks it is strange that the mining company has not got an agreement on the industrial area already many years ago, when it is crucial for the operation. Truls Gulowsen in the Nature Conservation Association has followed the mining plans in the Repparfjord closely. Photo: The Nature Conservation Association – This is something they should have cleaned up a long time ago, if it had been a serious company, says Gulowsen. – It seems that the merger with Blue Moon has given Nussir a little more economical muscles. Maybe the shares have become a little more attractive to the Wergeland group now, when it’s not just a speculative Nussir project. However, the most important thing for the Gulows is the environmental problems, and they still remain, he points out. – They do not have an agreement with reindeer husbandry, which can be significantly affected in their operations, and they do not have a solution that is environmentally acceptable. They still intend to dump in the sea, he points out. – These are the big problems they have to solve if the mine is to be realized. Helene Sofie Smit says that a broad alliance from reindeer husbandry, NSR, Nature and Youth, the Nature Conservation Association and many individual activists are ready to re -act. Photo: Nature and Youth Nature and Youth have formed an important part of the group that has previously taken action against Nussir’s plans. Helene Sofie Smit in the NU Central Board does not believe the property purchase is the crucial breakthrough for the mine. – I still do not believe that they will raise enough funds and investors, she says. She believes both Sami indigenous rights and pollution will stand in the way. Mine masses with toxic heavy metals are scheduled to be sent out in the Repparfjord. It has faced strong resistance from both fishermen and marine scientists. – Sea landfill is such a backward method that it scares away serious and large investors. We have seen that, says Smit. – Violation of international law Sami president Silje Karine Muotka says that the copper mine still still lacks agreement with landowners and licensees – primarily reindeer husbandry with grazing rights in the area. – They have to get it in place, says Muotka to news. In the 2019 license, the Ministry writes that they believe the measure “will not help prevent the exercise of reindeer husbandry, but that it should set conditions for mitigating measures to take into account the reindeer husbandry calving areas and floating.” The Sami Parliament doesn’t look forward to it. Muotka refers to a report from Protect Sápmi in 2019. It says that the Sami business and cultural practice in the area is threatened. – It also means that the project can represent a violation of Article 27 of the Convention on Civil and Political Rights. We mean that you cannot allow, says Muotka. Mayor Terje Rogde (Right) believes Nussir’s mining plans have passed an important milestone. Photo: Allan KLO / news satisfied the mayor far more positive tones come from Hammerfest’s mayor. Terje Rogde has been aware that the Nussir and the Wergeland group have not previously agreed on the use of the area. – It is very gratifying that they have come so far that they have landed an agreement, says Rogde. – This is what really gets the project over the doorstep, I think. It’s a really big milestone. – But is it right to use a protected salmon fjord for an area to deposit mining waste? – There are many opinions on exactly that matter, but now they have received a permit for it. Then more information comes from Nussir and Blue Moon Mining. They have a new technology to sort out the masses much better. So this is something we are interested in finding out more of. But they have received the permits, and it should be done, says Rogde.
