This vote could lead to the holding of anticipated legislative elections in the coming weeks, if the president chooses to dissolve the Assembly to get out of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \"><em>&#8220;I did not commit any crime&#8221;<\/em>had said earlier to Luis Montenegro deputies, whose party did not have an absolute majority in Parliament. Despite efforts to avoid the fall of the government in recent days, the opposition has camped on its positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">The secretary general of the Socialist Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, had asked Mr. Montenegro to refrain from asking for the confidence of parliamentarians, when a negative result was predictable, believing that Mr. Montenegro should rather have the courage to resign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">Tuesday evening, after more than half past three hours of heated debates, the session had been suspended for an hour in Parliament, time for the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of the Prime Minister and the Socialist Party to try last chance negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">The socialists announced Monday that they had formalized a request for a parliamentary commission of inquiry on the possible conflict of interest affecting the Prime Minister, inviting him to submit to it. The PSD had committed to the fact that the head of government would take part in it, demanding in return that it lasts only fifteen days &#8211; which the PS leader firmly refused, castigating <em>&#8220;Arrangements&#8221;<\/em> And believing that it was not up to the government to fix the rules.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article__sub-title\">The Prime Minister&#8217;s family business at the heart of the controversy<\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">The interruption of the session did not make it possible to flatten the dispute between the two training courses, and the socialists, as they had announced, voted against confidence in the government, in particular alongside the formation of the far right Chega.<\/p>\n<section class=\"inread  js-services-inread\">\n<p> <span>Newsletter<\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the front page&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Each morning, browse most of the news of the day with the last titles of the &#8220;world&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Register<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">At the heart of the controversy: a company to provide services held by the woman and the children of Luis Montenegro with contracts with several private companies, including a group whose activity is subject to concessions granted by the State. In addition to this case, there are revelations on possible irregularities committed during the acquisition of an apartment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">The head of government took office in April 2024, succeeding Antonio Costa, a socialist who had resigned in November 2023 as part of an investigation into alleged influence traffic. Mr. Costa, who has always denied any irregularity, was elected president of the European Council in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">He is now going back to the president, the curator Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to decide whether or not to dissolve Parliament. Before that, he must consult the parties represented in Parliament and then convene the Council of State, an advisory body, before deciding on the outcome he wishes to give to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph \">If they are summoned, anticipated legislative elections could be held on May 11 or 18, Rebelo de Sousa already announced.
