I was 16 years old. I was going home from a cinema performance and waiting for the bus. It was late, dark and no one else around me. Suddenly I heard “Now it will be good to get something, she there can’t exactly do any resistance”. On the other side of the street, out of a pub, three men came walking towards me. When I said I wasn’t interested, they said I should be happy someone at all would have sex with me, as inhibited as I was. I wish you knew what it feels like to be seen as a mistake, not just as a woman, but as a disabled woman. How society has chosen to ignore us, place us in boxes and in the shade, as if we do not exist. And even worse, as if we don’t matter. I wish you knew our story has never been recognized. That our struggle for rights, for freedom, in order to be treated as full -fledged people, has been fed to death. That if our history had been taken seriously, if it had been taught in school, if it had become part of society’s collective consciousness, the world would have looked different. Then the norms would have been different. Then the discrimination we encounter would not be as deeply rooted in the systems around us as it is for us who know it on the body. I wish you knew how through history we have been deprived of our lives. How disabled women have been sterilized without consent, because society did not want us to have children. How we have been considered a burden, deprived of the opportunity to love, to be mothers, to decide on our own bodies. Love and sexuality become a taboo when you are disabled, writes Marianne Knudsen. Photo: Private \/ Private I wish you knew that many of us have been closed inside institutions against our will. That we have not had the same opportunity to participate in democracy. That while others could go out on the street and demand justice, voice in elections, fight for their place in society, we were locked away and hidden from the world. And even now, when most institutions are gone and that many of us have user -controlled personal assistance, many still live under coercion and without real freedom of choice in their own lives. I wish you knew how dangerous it is to be a disabled woman. That we are much more likely to be subjected to abuse, for mental violence and for depriving control of control. That we more often than others are denied the right to decide who we should be with, where we will live, what we want to do in our lives. That there are women out there who know that they are being abused, but who have no place to go, because society has not prioritized their right to security. I wish you knew how we still face discrimination today. How we are underestimated in the labor market, not because we lack expertise, but because we do not fit into a world built for non-functional disabilities. How we are met with prejudice in the health care system, where pain is not taken seriously because we are “sick”. How we are treated as children, even as adult women, and how strangers talk to our assistants instead of us. I wish you knew how love and sexuality become a taboo when you are disabled. How society assumes that we cannot or should love. How we are portrayed as automatic asexuals, as some no one can request. And how, when we dare to demand our place in love, we are met with our partners being saints, with disbelief, shock, as if we are breaking an unwritten rule. I wish you knew how many times we had to fight for basic things you take for granted, like the right to move freely, to decide on our own body and to be taken seriously. I wish you knew we didn’t ask for sympathy. We ask for equality. We ask for a world that sees us, who hears us, who respects us. I wish you knew we live in a society where people and bodies are different and diverse. You need to know that we are here. We have always been here and we are just as many women. We are women who refuse to quiet quietly. Send us your utterance desire to write? Feel free to contact us in news Ytring with your post. The guidelines can be found here.
