There is a decrease of 1.3 percentage points from 2023. The largest decline was observed in Western Norway, which has previously had the highest fish mortality. The main causes of mortality in Norwegian farmed salmon were infectious diseases and injuries after lice treatment. For the first time, the bacterial disease piscirickett soda was detected in Northern Norway in 2024. It is probably related to high sea temperatures. Increase in bacterial diseases concerns the Veterinary Institute. A new report for wild salmon will be presented in April. The summary is made by a Ki service from Openai. The content is quality assured by news’s journalists before publishing. Fish mortality in the Norwegian aquaculture industry was 15.4 per cent last year. This is a decrease of 1.3 percentage points from 2023. It is stated in a recent report. – In recent years we have seen that the mortality rate for sea -produced farmed salmon has been steadily increasing. Now it is the first time since 2020 that we see a decline. This is stated by Ingunn Sommerset, department director for fish health and fish welfare at the Veterinary Institute. On Tuesday, they present the annual fish health report in Tromsø. It happens at the Fresh Fish Conference. Sommerset says they saw the biggest decline in western Norway. It is also the area that in recent years has had the highest fishing mortality. Ingunn Sommerset is acting department director for fish health and fish welfare at the Veterinary Institute. Photo: Eivind Senneset / news High sea temperatures give new dangers they had expected a sharp increase in the north due to the marine heat wave in the late summer. – When the temperature goes into the sea, the salmon lice propagate faster. It was not quite prepared for that, which is why there was a lot of debugging for the farmed salmon. But the rise in mortality was not as great as we thought, however, it remained quite stable. – It may indicate that the fish further north is more robust than the one in the south, she says. Salmon lice are still a major problem in Norwegian farming. Archive Photo: The Food Safety Authority The high sea temperatures presented several challenges. For the first time, the bacterial disease piscirickett soda was detected in Northern Norway in 2024.-The detections are likely to be related to high sea temperatures. If sea temperatures continue to rise, there is a danger that bacterial problems generally increase in scope. This is stated by Torfinn Moldal, who is responsible for fish health for aquaculture, wild fish and welfare in the Veterinary Institute. He is the editor of the fish health report. These are the main causes of the fish death The fish health report provides an annual overview of the health and welfare challenges in Norwegian farming. The breeders themselves reported to the Directorate of Fisheries 57.8 million dead farmed salmon in 2024. Infectious diseases and injuries after lice treatment were the main causes of mortality in Norwegian farmed salmon. The causes of death were distributed as follows: Infectious diseases approx. 33 percent. Damage approx. 27 percent. Unknown cause approx. 21 percent. Environmental conditions approx. 9 percent The other categories accounted for a smaller proportion. Mortality due to environmental conditions amounted to a much larger proportion in 2024 than the previous year. Then environmental conditions were 3 per cent. Pearl norms have presented challenges for the aquaculture industry. Photo: Rudolf Svensen This increase can be largely related to damage caused by jellyfish, especially in Northern Norway. -It is especially in Northern Norway that we receive reports that the invasion of pearl norms has created problems, says Sommerset. Bacterial diseases spread the report shows a positive development for several viral diseases. At the same time, there are no vaccines in the opposite direction for bacterial diseases. – We saw a bloom of a new bacterial disease called pasteurellosis in Western Norway in 2018. Fortunately, it has come under better control. But in 2024 we saw this bacterial disease for the first time in Northern Norway. This indicates that it may have spread. She says it was unexpected to see the bacterial disease piscirickett sow so far north. – It’s a little difficult. These bacteria enter the cells of the fish, and are therefore difficult to treat with antibiotics or make good vaccines against. So it is a disease we need to follow carefully. – What measures do you recommend to the aquaculture industry to get fixed mortality to fall in 2025 as well? – There are two simple but difficult things. One must prevent infection into the plant. This applies to both salmon lice and other infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses that cause problems. But when the salmon lice first come in and propagate over a certain level, the fish must be treated. Then a good assessment should be made in advance of whether the fish can withstand it, says Sommerset. Making its own report for the wild salmon Previously, the annual fish health report had a separate chapter for wild salmon. This year it will for the first time receive its own report. It will be presented in April.
