Chief economist at Nordea Kjetil Olsen believes Norges Bank has no reason to cut interest rates now. Photo: Petter Larsson \/ news With this development, the chief economist of Nordea Kjetil Olsen comes with a gloomy divination for the homeowners. – We are a little unsure if there will be interest rate cuts at all in 2025. Now we are wondering if we may have to go out in 2026 to get the first cut. He points out that the Norwegian economy is doing well, housing prices are growing and unemployment stays low. The goal of Norges Bank is for the price growth in society to be around 2 per cent over time. The latest numbers are 3.6. – Then, from Norges Bank’s standpoint, it is really no reason to cut interest rates. They have a mandate to keep rise growth low and stable, and it is not now. Therefore, it takes time for interest rates to come down. This is the consumer price index (KPI) consumer price index, or price growth, shows how the price of goods and services private households ask for changes. Thus, KPI shows changes in consumer prices for goods and services. KPI is usually compared to the previous year. KPI is often used as a measure of inflation. The figures come from Statistics Norway every month. There is hope chief economist in DNB Markets Kjersti Haugland calls the prices “startling”. – This was well above expectations, she tells news. Nor does she believe in interest rate cuts in the first place, but are still more optimistic than Olsen. – DNB now estimates two cuts in 2025, from the fall. Although he opens for 2026, Olsen also agrees that there may be cuts in 2025. He points to the housing market, among other things, as a possible Joker. According to Olsen, it is uncertain whether the high temperature in the housing market is due to the fact that people expect interest rate cuts, or whether there is a lasting change. – If they postpone the interest rate cut once again and push it, then the question is whether the speed in the housing market and consumption continues, or whether it stops slightly. If it does, there are opportunities that there may still be interest rate cuts.
