More students, more challenges When the government opens the door to all young people, it also leads to some challenges. Overcrowded classrooms, lack of teaching material and inadequate infrastructure push both teachers and students. Many schools in Ghana have classes with up to 80 students, and in order to get the cabal to go up, the classes are often divided into two who switch to teaching. But even with that solution, the classrooms are still full, and it makes it difficult for teachers to ensure that all students feel seen and receive the necessary support. Although Gifty Jennupiisiin is one of the young people who has been given the opportunity to attend school, she also notices the deficiencies. – On days when my group does not teach, I help my family in the village. But I prefer to be at school and learned something, she says. At Savelugu High School, which has 3600 students distributed over three vintages, the lack of furniture and premises is one of the biggest challenges. The school’s principal, Alhassan Abduli, points out that lack of investment in education makes it difficult to accompany the growing number of students. – Some children have major academic challenges from primary school, and that makes it difficult for them to follow. Teachers try to help, but in the crowded classes it is almost impossible to reach everyone, he says. Free education has been a milestone for millions of young people in Ghana, but the success requires a new step. It requires more schools, more hands and more teaching material to ensure that Ghana’s young people receive the best possible education. But the principal states that free education is a step in the right direction. – Whether you have a rich or poor background, a girl or boy, you can get education. That opportunity provides some form of freedom and creates equality, says Alhassan Abduli.
