It’s a very good start to the day, says Christell Bogstrand. Every day in December, she looked forward to opening today’s hatch. She got the calendar from her daughter Tonya Haugan. – She has always provided Christmas magic, so I wanted to show that I appreciated her extra at Christmas, says Tonya. And there were tears during the handover. – Mum is sort of grown up, but then I realized that it meant something, She burst into tears, and then I was moved back. The calendar from Tonya consists of a frame with 24 chocolate hearts inside. Every heart is a hatch, and behind the heart is something beautiful. Have you made a Christmas calendar this year? Answer at the bottom of the case. From young people to adults As is often the case, it is adults who make Christmas calendars for children. But this year, several have gone for a reverse variant, such as Tonya. Homemade calendars for mothers, fathers, siblings, boyfriends and grandparents abound on TikTok. Kaja Sofie Grøva made a calendar for her parents and boyfriend this year. – I wanted to give something to my loved ones. They were very moved, she says. She thinks the calendar has won its way on TikTok because it is cheap and personal. Kaja Sofie’s parents, Knut and Kristin Grøva, say it’s nice to be thought of. – It shows that the children have learned something important while growing up, they say. Amalie Hansen has taken it one step further and made a packing calendar for her parents. – It is important that they get back a lot of the love they have given. I am so grateful and want to show it as often as I can, she says. FAMILY: Amalie together with her parents Dag-Jøran Ness and Annette Hansen Ness, and the family dog. Photo: Private – I think it may be about the fact that it feels good to give something. That’s what Monica B. Prydz says is a specialist in psychology and research fellow at the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo. – We live in a time of major crises in the world, and we know that many people are having a hard time. Then it can seem more meaningful to help each other, rather than to get all the time. DEEPER JOY: Making others happy can give us a deeper joy, says Monica B. Prydz. Photo: Julianne Flølo Never for old Even Tokerud and Isak Stene Rygh are both 24 years old, and both have their own Christmas calendar. One has a chocolate calendar, and the other has a Flax calendar. They think it gives extra joy in a dark month. – It is getting colder and we can feel that it is dark. The weekday can be heavier, but then we have an extra joy, says Isak. Even adds: – In the morning now it’s pitch black, but then there’s like that small piece of chocolate – which is a great way to start the day. NO AGE LIMIT: Even Tokerud and Isak Stene Rygh are clear that you can have a Christmas calendar all your life. Photo: Julianne Flølo Both think it’s a good thing that more people are now cooking for adults. – Is it time for those of us who have always received to give something back? – It may be approaching that age now, yes. They also believe that advent calendars have no age limit. – You can have that all your life. It’s just fun, and shouldn’t have an age limit, asserts Isak. One of five ways to happiness Making others happy can give us deeper happiness, says researcher Prydz. – Research shows that when we give and help each other, we experience positive feelings and happiness. She says that “inverted Christmas calendar” can be more than children giving to adults. – You can, for example, give of your time, give attention or compliments rather than gifts. Have you given someone a Christmas calendar this year? No, it has to be done…😤 Yes, it was fun! 🥰 No, but now I was inspired for next year. 🤝 That was the plan, but I didn’t have time. 😅 Show result – But can such calendars lead to extra pressure? – Yes, maybe so. But Christmas is stressful for many, and perhaps one can experience this as more of a low threshold. According to Prydz, giving is one of five ways to happiness. – What are the others then? – To be attentive and present, to be physically active, to bond with others and to learn.
