Then Israel annexed the area in 1981. This means that they have taken over the area and declared it their own. The annexation is contrary to international law. It is only the United States, under Donald Trump, that has recognized the Golan Heights as Israeli territory. Now the Israeli government has decided to expand the Israeli settlements in the area and “double the population”. Israeli soldiers on the Golan Heights, 11 December. They are now doing that in country after country, says Middle Eastern expert Hilde Henriksen Waage to news. Germany is among the countries asking Israel to put aside its plans for the Golan Heights. “Strategically important” After the Arab-Israeli war in 1967, a buffer zone was established between Israel and Syria which the UN has monitored for 50 years, not unlike the buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The map shows the occupied Golan Heights. Mount Hermon, which is Syria’s highest mountain and also the highest point in the region, lies in the buffer zone. Now Israeli forces have entered the area and up the mountain, justifying it with the fact that the “security agreement was revoked” when the Assad regime fell a little over a week ago. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz calls the mountain strategically important, and has asked the Israeli forces to prepare to stay there through the winter. There are also 20,000 Syrians living there, most of them descendants of Druze who did not flee when Israel occupied the area in 1967. Several Syrians the AP news agency has spoken to say that they want peace with Israel, but that they want the Golan Heights to become part of Syria that – We already have enough of a problem Former Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, says that there is no reason for Israel to take more land from the Golan Heights. – We already have enough problems, he told the BBC World Service radio programme. Olmert and Defense Minister Israel Katz also stood on each other’s sides in 2004, when Katz mistakenly announced an expansion of the settlements on the Golan Heights, which Olmert rejected. Syrian Druze celebrated on the annexed Golan Heights when the regime fell on 8 December. They want peace with Israel, but that the area should be Syrian. Photo: Stoyan Nenov \/ Reuters In the last week, Israeli forces have also attacked hundreds of targets in Syria. Israel calls it self-defense “in the face of political uncertainty” after the fall of the regime. – This leads to a great deal of uncertainty and anger in a country that needs all resources to gather and try to build the country from the ground up, says Middle Eastern expert Waage. The new de facto leader in Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, calls the attack an escalation, but adds that the country is too exhausted to enter a new conflict. According to the observer group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Israel attacked several military targets in the coastal region of Tartous on Sunday. It will be the most powerful attack against the region in over ten years. The United Arab Emirates has condemned the Israeli military operations in Syria in the last week, and the expansion of the settlements. – This is part of an ongoing sabotage of opportunities to restore security and stability in Syria, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a statement.
