The Golan Heights are part of Syria, but have been occupied by Israel since 1967, after the so-called six-day war with Arab countries. Then Israel annexed the area in 1981. This means that they have taken over the area and declared it their own. The annexation is contrary to international law. It is only the United States, under Donald Trump, that has recognized the Golan Heights as Israeli territory. Germany is among the countries asking Israel to put aside its plans for the Golan Heights. “Strategically important” After the Arab-Israeli war in 1967, a buffer zone was established between Israel and Syria which the UN has monitored for 50 years, not unlike the buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
