And now the trend has come to Norway through the boxing promoter “Ultimate Celebrity Boxing” (UCB). – They do not meet for a civilized panel debate where the best argument wins, but rather whoever can hit the hardest, is the most trained and has the biggest muscles, says media researcher at the University of Oslo, Steffen Krüger. He believes that “celebrity boxing” is an expression of the fact that we are in a society where aggressive attitudes are highly valued. – I thought it was a naive perspective, replies UCB spokesperson Christer Hurum Rosseland, who rather believes that the organization can help reduce violence and aggression. The fight generated over NOK 121 million . Since then there have been several examples of internet personalities challenging each other or meeting famous boxers in the ring. Of particular note is Logan Paul’s fight against the undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather in 2021, and when his brother Jake Paul recently went up against one of the sport’s greatest legends, Mike Tyson. Last year, an MMA match was even arranged between tech giants Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Musk said in a podcast that he was willing to let the winner gain ownership of the other’s tech platform (X/Meta) for 24 hours. The match did not come to fruition, and was probably intended rather as a humorous challenge on social media. The invention still seems to be part of a larger trend where famous people challenge each other to a fight. Who wins? Elon Musk Mark Zuckerberg Show result “Ultimate Celebrity Boxing” has already organized its first of several events, where, among other things, TikTok profiles and reality celebrities met each other in the ring. – It’s a really fun trend that has gone viral internationally, and now it’s an entertainment idea that we think the Norwegian public can participate in, says Hurum Rosseland in “Ultimate Celebrity Boxing” The search for something “manly” One of those who took part in the first convention were Tim Enersen, also known as “SterkeTim” with almost 180,000 followers on TikTok. – I have never boxed myself, but have seen quite a few fights. It was very fun to go to battle, he says to news. Tim Enersen, also known as “SterkeTim” on TikTok, headlined the first convention. He thought the concept was fun, and is considering going to another match. Photo: Rahand Bazaz Tim “SterkeTim” Enersen says that he has been offered a new fight against a TikToker abroad that he is considering. – Do you think it is true that boxing between celebrities is an expression of our culture becoming more aggressive? – I haven’t thought about that, but it seems that there is something in that claim, says Enersen, who believes that the desire for, and the search for, something “manly” can be an explanation. Ultimate Celebrity Boxing (UCB) will establish “celebrity boxing” in Norway where TikTok profiles and reality celebrities meet in the ring. They have already organized their first convention, and are planning another one over the New Year. Photo: Ultimate Celebrity Boxing (UCB) – Maybe only nudity has such a big attraction Former boxer and boxing expert Anders Werner Øfsti doesn’t think much of the concept. He believes it must be the celebrity interest that lies at the bottom. – It has absolutely no sporting value, I wonder what the motivation for watching it is, he asks. Anders Werner Øfsti is a former boxer and boxing expert. He believes that “celebrity boxing” has little sporting value. Photo: Morten Waagø / Morten Waagø So what is it about celebrities and influencers hitting each other that is now emerging as an entertainment concept? Media researcher Krüger compares “celebrity boxing” to low-hanging fruit. – Perhaps only nudity and pornography have a greater immediate attraction than a fight. Anders Werner Øfsti also works as a journalist at news. Thinks our culture is becoming more aggressive Krüger wonders if boxing matches between celebrities and influencers are an expression of a culture that is becoming more primitive and aggressive. – The temptation to see famous people fighting each other is everywhere now, and I found it quite worrying. There is something in the wind that tries to tempt us with aggression, he says. Media researcher Steffen Krüger at the University of Oslo believes that internet personalities and celebrities challenging each other in the ring is an expression of the fact that aggressive attitudes are becoming more common in our culture. Photo: Jonas Ørbeck Sire / news Hurum Rosseland disagrees. He believes that the conventions can help draw people, especially young boys, into organized sports and thus reduce aggression. – It has been proven a long time ago that those who are engaged and associated with sports clubs in connection with boxing and other martial arts, so to speak, never get into trouble, he says and refers to a research article. He points out that UCB works closely with players in sports. At the same time, he believes that celebrities can be an effective means of reaching people. – I think you have to bring in celebrities and people they care about. What young people are doing today is following Instagram and TikTok. They spend a lot of time on, and are actively involved in, the celebrities’ lives. What do you think about “celebrity boxing”? This seems like an exciting entertainment concept I don’t want to draw any attention to this Show result Published 16.12.2024, at 21.51

ttn-69

A number of big internet profiles and celebrities have challenged each other in the boxing ring in recent years.
