In May, he promised a billion-dollar investment, called the “waiting time lift”, to reduce the queues at hospitals in the country. And in a live broadcast on Facebook, published on Friday last week, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Vestre rejoice that the waiting lists in the health service have decreased. – It’s incredibly nice during Christmas to see that the trend has now been broken, it’s on the way down, right way and right course, says Jonas Gahr Støre. – We knew when we started the waiting time promise that it would go up a bit, and also come down again. And that’s the offense that has come, says Støre further in the video. Vestre says that the waiting time at the hospital in November this year was as long as last year. – It shows that the waiting time promise is working, says Vestre. But by taking a closer look at the figures from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, it turns out that waiting times are actually longer now than in November last year. They have only increased less than what they did a month ago. (See the entire video of Støre and Vestre at the bottom of the article). Celebrating that the trend is turning From November last year to November this year, the waiting time increased from 75.1 to 75.5 days on average nationwide. Facts about the waiting period lift The Government, the Trade Union, the Norwegian Nurses’ Association, the Norwegian Medical Association, Delta, the Psykologforeningen, Spekter, Virke, NHO Geneo, Helse Midt-Norge RHF, Helse Nord RHF, Helse South-East RHF and Helse West RHF are launching the following measures to get reduce waiting times: The partners will support measures for the correct use of personnel and expertise, including better division of responsibilities and tasks, appropriate working time arrangements and reduced sickness absence. Extra efforts, such as evening and weekend outpatient clinics, are relevant measures in some contexts, and must be based on the voluntary nature of the health personnel. Digital solutions and innovations that are documented and disseminated are important for freeing up working time, for interaction and for patients. Changes in organisation, reduced reporting and new ways of providing services, including user-managed polyclinics and good logistics solutions, can be used to contribute to better and more efficient patient processes. Private actors, both non-profit and commercial, can also help reduce waiting times. The use of private actors must take place in agreement with the regional health organisations. The parties also agree to prioritize measures related to specialist areas characterized by: treating patients with serious conditions and a high risk of deteriorating health due to long waiting times many patients on waiting lists and/or already long waiting times. Source: The Vestre Government believes that a good basis has now been laid for them to achieve a marked reduction in waiting times through 2025. He explains that the health queue for long-term waiting and deadline breaches is decreasing. In addition, they have received an average waiting time for those waiting which is four days shorter than last year. – This also means that the average figure for starting health care may fall in the coming months. I have faith that we will achieve that, with hard effort, he says. – Completely unacceptable The leader of the Storting’s health and care committee, Tone Wilhelmsen Trøen (H) believes that waiting times in the health service have gone through the roof under the Støre government. – Patients wait an average of two weeks longer, and 260,000 people are on the health care queue. It is completely unacceptable, she says to news. The leader of the Storting’s health and care committee, Tone Wilhelmsen Trøen (H). Photo: Terje Pedersen / NTB She believes several hundred thousand patients will see their lives on hold because of their policy. – It is reasonably provocative, she says. She points to the fact that there is spare capacity in the private sector that this government is not using. – It is completely meaningless, and I think it creates a two-part health service where people feel forced to pay out of their own pockets, she says. If Høgre wins the election next year, one of the most important things for the party will be to give patients quick and good help, says Trøen. – Therefore, we will buy more available capacity from private companies, strengthen hospital finances and give hospitals better payment for treating more patients. None of this has been delivered by the Støre government, she believes. Health and Care Minister Jan Christian Vestre and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre say that the health queue is shorter on a Facebook live on Friday 13 December. Figures from FHI show that the health queues are longer.
