Photo: Privat \/ news Reem and the grandfather both had birthdays on Christmas Eve. But a year ago, one month before Reem would have turned four, she and older brother Tarek (5) were killed in an Israeli attack. It happened while they were sleeping in their beds in the house in Nuseirat. The grandfather told how he tried to breathe life into Reem’s little body. “Soul of my soul,” he called her, as he held the lifeless girl in his arms. Now, almost exactly one year later, it has become known that he has suffered the same fate. The grandfather and grandson Reem were inseparable. Running towards the wounded Nabhan died after an attack by an Israeli tank, according to Al-Awda hospital in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip. It was reported by CNN. The news channel spoke to the nephew, Saed Nabhan, who described how his uncle was killed: – He saw injured people and ran to help. But he was immediately killed by another tank attack, Nabhan said. CNN says it has reached out to the Israeli army for comment, but has not heard back. Khaled Nabhan later became known for volunteering to distribute food to children and animals in Gaza. Photo: Ramadan Abed \/ Reuters More than 45,000 killed When news published the video about Khaled Nabhan and Reem last year, the war in Gaza had raged for around two months. Gaza’s health authorities then estimated that around 6,000 children had been killed so far in the war. The war broke out on October 7 after Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, led an attack in Israel that killed around 1,200 people. Over a year later, Gaza’s population is suffering from famine, cold and lack of food and medicine. More than 45,000 people have now been killed, according to the health authorities. Around 70 percent are women and children, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. A further 26,000 are estimated to have suffered “life-changing injuries”, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNHCR). The UN office warns that Israel continues its attacks from the air, from the sea and on land. The Israeli army has repeatedly claimed that it only attacks military targets in the Gaza Strip, that it follows international law, and that it tries to avoid civilian casualties. Several countries and organizations have accused Israel of deliberately attacking and starving civilians. Interested in abroad?
