Mohn is the owner of two precious ancient coins. However, the French and Italian authorities believe that the coin belongs to them. One coin allegedly comes from a shipwreck in Corsica, and the French authorities believe it should have been given to them. Instead, it was sold by the finders. When it was discovered that the coin was for sale at Oslo Myntgalleri, the French authorities stopped the sale. The coin was then seized by the Oslo Police District and placed at the Cultural History Museum. Couldn’t sell the coin The auction company Oslo Myntgalleri, which was supposed to sell the coin on behalf of Mohn, objected to the seizure and wanted the coin back. The district court initially decided to lift the seizure, but the ruling was appealed by the prosecution. Now the Borgarting Court of Appeal has decided that the seizure will not be lifted anyway. Mohn and the auction house will therefore not be able to sell the coin in the first place. Facsimile of the website where the coin was for sale. It was withdrawn from the market earlier this year. Facsimile: Oslo Myntgalleri Oslo Myntgalleri stated that they were planning a new auction in November, where it was appropriate to sell the coin. They said they thus still had an interest in the seizure. The Court of Appeal believes this was not enough to give them the coin back. They also consider that it is not appropriate to sell the coin while the investigation is ongoing. At the same time, they emphasize that it is Trond Mohn who is the owner of the coin, and that only he can demand that the seizure be lifted. However, Mohn has not appeared in court or responded in the case. “In the view of the Court of Appeal, the petition from Oslo Myntgalleri AS should therefore have been rejected, in accordance with the prosecution’s claim”. – A non-case The auction house only has status as a suspect in the case, and has not been charged. However, Mohn believes that the charge against him as the owner of the coin is unfounded. – That gold coin was at one time seized by the German authorities and was released at the end of the 90s. If the French authorities had contacted the German authorities, they would have understood that the coin is free, he told news. He also said at the time that he has not responded to the police and the court’s inquiries because he believes it is a non-issue. – That is why I failed to meet in Oslo. I think it’s just police work. The Oslo district court wrote in a ruling this summer that Mohn bought the coin in good faith from a seller, and that there is no evidence that he did anything illegal by putting it up for sale again. Origins from the Roman era The coin in question originates from the Roman Empire, where Emperor Quintillus ruled in the year 270. During his short reign, he had gold coins produced with his own name and image. The coin is rare because Quintilus was emperor for only two months. Photo: Museum of Natural History, UiO The Quintillus coins are both rare and expensive. When Trond Mohn’s coin was put up for sale, the starting bid was NOK 300,000. However, the value should be close to NOK 1.5 million. French authorities believe the coin originates from the so-called Lava treasure, where a ship with Roman gold is said to have been wrecked off Corsica. However, when it was found, it was sold on instead of being handed over to the French authorities.
