Photo: Eirik Pessl-Kleiven / news – I have decided to say no to re-election. For the party, it is good to bring in new forces, new energy and new ideas into the role of party secretary, says Stenseng to news. Facts about Kjersti Stenseng * Born 4 September 1974. From Kvam in Nord-Fron in Gudbrandsdalen, where her father Gunnar Tore Stenseng was Ap mayor from 1984 to 2007. * Party secretary in the Labor Party since 2015. Member of the central board since 2011. Former county leader in Oppland Ap. Experience as state secretary and political adviser in the Ministry of Culture. * Has been festival manager for the Peer Gynt vote and festival manager for the Norwegian Literature Festival. – Has not been asked to leave As party secretary elected by the national meeting, she has the highest organizational responsibility in the party. Together with party leader Jonas Gahr Støre and deputy leaders Tonje Brenna and Jan Christian Vestre, she forms the quartet that leads the Labor Party. When she became party secretary, Ap had put a number of strong polls behind her. The party had a support of over 40 per cent in eight out of nine polls from March that year. Now Ap sees the 14th in individual polls and in the local elections last year it was the Conservative Party that took over the status as Norway’s largest party. Earlier this month, news was able to report that heavy voices in the party want replacements in the party leadership. Several other media have reported the same. – Have you been asked to leave? – No, I have not been asked to go. I choose to say it now, because the party will have to spend time finding new candidates. I want to contribute to the renewal that I believe the party needs, she says. Definitely a long time After the war, only Haakon Lie and Ivar Leveraas have had a longer tenure as party secretary than Kjersti Stenseng. Stenseng denies that the choice to step back is related to the weak form in the opinion polls, where Ap is on average below 18 percent in December. – This is something I have been thinking about for quite some time. I probably made the decision during the summer. TOPPENE: Stenseng was re-elected as party secretary two years ago. Then Tonje Brenna and Jan Christian Vestre also joined the management. Photo: Heiko Junge / NTB – But this was also a topic two years ago at the national meeting. Then there were some in the party who thought you should resign. Why did you choose to stay? – I was motivated to continue, but I have also always been keen to make room for new ones. And I really want to now. Ten years as party secretary is a long time. I think it’s very nice to say thank you now, says Stenseng. – Jonas Gahr Støre has already been party leader for more than ten years. Should he do the same as you, to say no to re-election? – This is exclusively a decision that is about me and no one else. Jonas has my full trust. And then I think that others have to make their own choices. – Is it renewal enough to just replace one of the management of four people? – When I say no to re-election, it is my privilege not to choose who will be elected at the national meeting, says Stenseng. 30 per cent In 2018, Kjersti Stenseng said something in a VG interview that she has constantly had to defend: – Yes, there is a limit of 30 per cent: Over time, we shall not be below 30 per cent, it is not possible, she said of the support to Ap. But in two parliamentary elections and two municipal elections, the result has been far weaker than that for Ap. – What has gone wrong? – It is not easy to give a short answer to that. I think there are many reasons. But in the ten years that I have been party secretary, we have been through some tough times, which have also caused us to lose confidence, says Stenseng. – When we – like now – have personal discussions, it in no way contributes to lifting us up in the measurements. – Are you tired of being confronted with this statement about 30 percent? – No, I vouch for it. A large social democratic party should be able to reach 30 per cent, says Stenseng. CONFLICTS: There has been no shortage of conflicts in the Labor Party during Stenseng’s time as party secretary. Here with Støre and the two then deputy leaders Tajik and Giske in 2017. Photo: Terje Pedersen / NTB Stenseng says she has not been able to spend as much time on organizational development and team building as she imagined when she took office in 2015. – I have spent a lot time for inward-oriented work that will primarily end up on my desk, and that I don’t want people to read about in the media. But I have also traveled a lot in our party. And what remains as a very good memory for me are all the wonderful people who stand up every day for the Labor Party all over the country. Under pressure news and several other media have described the internal pressure to which Labor Party leader and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre is exposed. In several county teams, there are heavy voices who believe he should resign before the election next autumn. – Do you have a call for party colleagues who are now following the drama unfolding in the Labor Party? – We have good processes for choosing both management and the central board at the national meeting: use those processes and do it internally, but focus on the politics and the issues, and what the voters care about, she says. The central board of the Labor Party is scheduled to meet on a recommendation to the election committee during a meeting on 20 January. This election committee will be formally appointed at a national board meeting in February and will probably be chaired by LO leader Peggy Hessen Følsvik. The final elections must be made by the national meeting, which meets every two years and is the Labor Party’s highest body. This year, the national meeting takes place at the beginning of April. Metoo and Giske Stenseng have thus been party secretaries for almost ten years. It is difficult to ignore the metoo cases in the Labor Party and the conflicts surrounding Trond Giske when Kjersti Stenseng’s period as party secretary is to be summed up. Photo: Erlend Dalhaug Daae / NTB – 2017 and 2018 with metoo and all that happened there, is one of the worst and most difficult things we have been through. So dealing with difficult things has now been my lot, then. That is perhaps what has shaped my time in the Labor Party, says Stenseng. – Is there anything about the handling of the metoo cases that you should have done differently? – You always see things that you can do differently. We didn’t know what awaited us. We had never been in that situation before. The most important thing is that we have accepted lessons and experience. And then I am very self-critical. Whatever I do, I think: How can I do it differently? Looking back, I think that the most important thing is that you learn from what you do, and that you do the best you can every day. TOUGH ROUNDS: Kjersti Stenseng says many tough internal rounds have marked her time as party secretary. Photo: Eirik Pessl-Kleiven / news Trond Giske is on his way back to the Storting, as the Labor Party’s list leader from Trøndelag. But it did not happen without harsh words and great internal opposition in the county team. – I have spent a lot of time on it. It was a difficult and divisive process for many. But it is the Trøndelag Labor Party that has chosen Trond as its top candidate. I have full respect for that. And then my job for the next three months is to help ensure that we are well prepared for an election campaign where our team is as united as possible. A long series of cabinet resignations and other scandalous cases have also left their mark on Stenseng’s time as party secretary. More Ap profiles will not be seen in the Storting in the next term. – Is there anyone you think the party will particularly miss in the future? – I don’t want to single out individuals, but I think it has been painful to see skilled politicians who have gone out of position, whether it has been because of small or big issues.
