Photo: Gisle Jørgensen / news – I feel it well. And probably annoys me as much as everyone else. You have to throttle back where possible and try not to use so much power. The cabin has been passed down in the Lund family. – If it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t have had it. We now have a monthly consumption that is higher than the quarterly consumption a few years ago. When he is at home, like everyone else, he has power support. It works so that 90 per cent of the price for electricity above 73 øre is covered. The support acts as a quota. You only get electricity support of up to 5,000 kWh per month. This is the electricity subsidy: Electricity subsidy means that the government helps you with your electricity bill when electricity prices are high. Threshold price: You pay full price up to 73 øre per kWh (excl. VAT). You get support for everything above this. Support rate: 90 per cent of the price above 73 øre is covered by the state. Automatic deduction: The support is deducted directly from your bill, so you don’t have to do anything yourself. Example: If the electricity price is NOK 13 per kWh, you pay the first NOK 73 in full. Of the remaining NOK 12.27, you pay 10 percent, approximately NOK 1.23. In total, you pay NOK 1.96 per kWh (excl. VAT) after the electricity subsidy. The rest is covered by the state. Incl. VAT, the price is NOK 2.45. The electricity subsidy was introduced in December 2021 as a response to the high electricity prices in Norway. The scheme has since been extended and adjusted several times to help households with increased expenditure on electricity. The electricity subsidy has now been extended to apply until 2025. – I think it is strange that the authorities should focus on where we are. – The scheme is equal and fair for everyone Everyone in Norway receives electricity support at home, including those who live permanently in the cottage, points out State Secretary Elisabeth Sæther in the Ministry of Energy. – We have prioritized providing safe and good electricity support to everyone in Norway where they live. The system is equal and fair for everyone. NOK 50 billion in electricity subsidies will soon be paid out. We have changed the scheme so that it applies hour by hour, and it has been extended for the whole of next year. Elisabeth Sæther, state secretary in the Ministry of Energy, says the scheme is fair. Photo: Johan Moen / news There is therefore no question of changing the scheme so that you can use some of the quota on holiday homes. Lund is clear in his speech that cabin owners should not receive more electricity support than others. – But it should be optional where we can use the support, he believes. What measures do you take when you are at the cabin to save electricity? I do the dishes by hand! I turn off the lights in all rooms I’m not using. The laundry will have to wait until I get home. I skip the shower at the cabin. I do all the measures mentioned here! I don’t have electricity in the cabin. Show result Worried about business in cottage municipalities – It is a fact that high electricity prices result in fewer overnight stays in the cottages, says Lund. And that has drastic consequences for local businesses and grocery stores, he believes. – I don’t think I’m the only one who shops a lot where the cabins are. Everything from materials to fix the cabin to food, is bought locally. It is a trade that is limited when the number of trips to the cabin decreases. State Secretary Sæther says that the government has taken measures to help the areas with extra high electricity prices. – Among other things, we have introduced a scheme for lower network rent in areas with high electricity prices. NOK 9.2 billion has been paid out through this scheme, and it has been extended for the whole of next year. This will benefit both electricity customers, cabin owners and local businesses.
