On Friday, it became clear that Norway will meet Israel for World Cup qualification in football. It has already caused reactions. – We believe that Norway cannot play against them when they are being investigated for genocide, and when the leaders in the country have arrest warrants, says spokesperson Rami Samandar of the Action Group for Palestine. He believes it will be immoral to meet Israel, and encourages the national team to boycott the games. In that case, it could mean that Norway loses all the points in those games. – There are some things that are important in life, and that is human life. Football cannot be neutral when innocent children are killed. We believe it is a historic chance that the national team has, to show solidarity and stand on the right side of history, says Samandar. Fortunately, we have a strong political leadership in the NFF (Norwegian Football Association), so I expect Lise (Klaveness, football president) to represent the NFF in this respect, says Solbakken to news. In addition, around 4,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon and up to 800 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank. Israel says the war in Gaza is necessary to prevent Hamas from being able to attack again. Riots in Amsterdam On 7 November, Maccabi Tel Aviv played an away match in the Europa League against Ajax in Amsterdam. In connection with the match, there were violent clashes between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and the supporters of the Israeli team. Authorities in Amsterdam said after the match that some of the protesters “actively sought out Israeli supporters to attack and assault them”. Israeli President Isaac Herzog subsequently called the clashes a pogrom against Jews. Rami Samandar in the Action Group for Palestine says it is too early to say whether they will take action in any way. But he fears conditions like in Amsterdam. – I fear that if these supporters come to Norway, that they will make noise in our streets, he says. Solbakken says the most important thing for them is that the matches can be played under orderly conditions, and that football president Lise Klaveness is responsible for the rest of what happens around them.
