Ole Einar Bjørndalen (biathlon), Martin Johnsrud Sundby (cross-country skiing), Eivind Henriksen (hammer throw), Sivert Bakken (biathlon) and Charlotte Kalla (cross-country skiing) have all spoken about how problems with the heart have affected their careers. Last weekend, cross-country skier Erik Valnes had to break a run due to problems with his heart, while biathlete Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold is taking a break from the World Cup after two consecutive episodes of heart rhythm problems. – It’s disgusting to have that moment of uncertainty when you stand at the start, says former cross-country runner Maximillian von Selchow Bie. Bie herself has experienced first-hand what it is like to have trouble with her heart. – I tried not to think about it and pretend everything was normal, but it was a big disappointment every time it came. It gives you a kick. Heart rhythm disorders Heart rhythm disorder (cardiac arrhythmia) is a collective term for any form of abnormal heart rhythm. The heart may beat too fast, too slowly or irregularly. Heart rhythm disturbances are relatively common. It includes a number of harmless conditions, but occasionally it can also represent serious heart disease. The symptoms vary depending on the condition, you may feel palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness or fatigue. More rarely, heart rhythm disturbances can lead to fainting and, in the worst case, cardiac arrest. Source: Oslo University Hospital Bie competed for a long time at a high national level, both as a junior and senior runner, and has several strong results to show for it. He took NM bronze in the team sprint at the latest in March this year, together with national team runner Erik Valnes. HEART PROBLEMS: One had to quit due to heart problems. The other competes to be the best in the world. Photo: Terje Pedersen / NTB But due to irregular heart fibrillation, Bie had to put her career on hold, which was a tough challenge. – It is almost worse psychologically. Physically it was okay to have to stop, but when it happened frequently it was always in the back of my mind. Three operations The first time Bie had heart fibrillation was on a training trip at Sørreisa in Troms with childhood friend Erik Valnes. Heart fibrillation Heart fibrillation, also called atrial fibrillation or atrial fibrillation, is a condition caused by rapid and irregular electrical activity in the atria of the heart. Heart fibrillation can also lead to an irregular rhythm in the heart’s main chambers. Heart fibrillation often occurs in fits and starts, and not infrequently in connection with other heart disease. The most common symptoms of heart fibrillation are fast and/or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, difficulty breathing, reduced performance, chest pain, and feelings of restlessness and anxiety. However, a good number do not experience any symptoms. Heart fibrillation can be treated with drugs, electrical conversion or ablation therapy to regulate and stabilize the heart rate. He also had an experience on the football field in the same period. – Then I felt a little alone and wasn’t sure what it could be. I checked it with the doctor, but it only came when I trained very hard. That’s why I went with an EKG meter over a week. Bie describes that the attacks came in “hut and gun”. So often that he had to have three operations, the last time in 2017. A lot of stress, illness or poor sleep were often the cause of disturbances to the heart. – But for one period I lost the common thread. Then it was so frequent that I had no answer as to why it came anymore, says Bie. Today he works as a trainer at NTG in Tromsø, and doesn’t notice it in everyday life. This winter, however, he has been reminded several times of what it is like to have it. On Sunday, childhood friend Valnes had to retire after having a heart fibrillation attack just before the finish line. STOPPED UP: Erik Valnes had to break on instructions from the doctor. Pictures from TV 2. Photo: Screenshot / TV 2 – I have investigated and checked it out earlier, so it shouldn’t be too dangerous. I think I have good control over it, says Valnes about the situation. Stay tuned on He emphasizes that it is all undramatic, but that they have nevertheless taken action. In recent days, the 29-year-old has been walking around with an EKG meter to be on the safe side. – Is it the case that they send it somewhere? – Yes, Ove (Feragen, national team doctor) is sitting at Tynset and watching on the phone now, for sure. It has become very easy now, obviously, says Valnes. CLOSE FOLLOW-UP: Erik Valnes walks around with an EKG meter. Photo: Geir Olsen / NTB – So you talk to him a bit on the phone? – Yes, he hasn’t called until now, so it seems that things are working well. Valnes is not afraid that it will break out during several races. Feragen also confirms that things are under control. – It happens so rarely that when it happens maybe three, four or five times a year, it’s bad luck. I can’t think about it, says Valnes. Health first Valnes believes that it is safe to say that the problems have been sorted out for Bie. Together, they have aired what is on their hearts. – We have shared experiences about what triggers it, without us having great medical expertise. We have shared what we feel and feel – and how to avoid it, says Bie. The pictures of Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold, who struggled with heart rhythm disturbances in Kontiolahti, also made headlines. She has now chosen to take a break from the World Cup. Bee thinks it’s sad to see. – You were told to stop pushing yourself. It’s boring, Erik probably knew that too. It’s a terrible feeling to break a ski race, but health comes first, says Bie. Both Valnes, Tandrevold and Bie say that they have received close and good follow-up from doctors and specialists. Serious One who has also struggled with heart fibrillation, but who is still active, is biathlete Sivert Bakken. He says that his heart was racing and his pulse skyrocketed. It was also a strain mentally. – It’s not pleasant, and you get a little worried when it happens. After all, it is the heart, so it is not something to be trifled with, says Bakken. SMILING NOW: But it has not always been easy for Sivert Bakken. Photo: Hanne Skjellum – Absolutely decisive He has been out of action for two seasons due to a heart infection, but is now back on track after an operation. – I had to have surgery to be able to continue with sports. There was no theme to continue with something that affects the performance so much. It simply means that you don’t get what you’re good at in competition, says Bakken. – Were you afraid of your career? – Now I had pretty good follow-up, and I think we coped with it in a good way. I received very good support from both the union and the doctors. I was aware that if things didn’t turn out well again, you wouldn’t be able to perform at the top level. So a rational concern, you might say. BACK: Sivert Bakken had to undergo heart surgery to continue his sports career. Photo: Øystein Ulekleiv / news The operation was simply the rescue. – It worked very well and was absolutely crucial for me. Sports physician Bård I. Freberg has worked in the Norwegian Biathlon Union for over 25 years. Freberg says that the most important thing for anyone who experiences a cardiac arrhythmia is to stop all exercise and be examined by a specialist – and to avoid large amounts of caffeine and alcohol. – That is the basic rule for everyone involved in top sports. You shouldn’t joke about heart arrhythmia, because in the worst case it can be something completely different from heart fibrillation, says Freberg. SEE A DOCTOR: As soon as you experience something abnormal with your heart, is the tip from long-time sports doctor Bård I. Freberg. Photo: Privat / Privat He emphasizes the importance of being sure that you have a harmless type of heart fibrillation. If it has been ascertained, there are a few tricks the athletes can do. – Some hold their breath, some try the valsalva manoeuvre, then you can manage to stop it. But in the vast majority of cases you just have to break the race. Rare condition – What did you think when you saw the pictures of Tandrevold? – It was not fun to see Tandrevold break the race. I know what lies behind many, many years of hard work to get to where she is now. Although Valnes and Tandrevold have had heart problems at the same time, Freberg would not call it a trend. – We have had a few cases over the years, but I would not say that it is a trend. Because it is a rare condition. He points out that it is probably the hard, physical activity over time that triggers problems with the heart. – Then there will be certain, structural scarring inside the heart’s pace and then signals will arise elsewhere than where they are supposed to come, says Freberg.
