Are you ready for some really critical, in-depth journalistic questions about words? – Hehe! I’m ready. – Fine, then we’ll start. Just first: You have previously both used the terms “word of the year” and “new word of the year” – which is correct here? – These are words that are either new or have been little used in the past. We call it the word of the year, but part of the point is that they should be new. – Is this year’s new word…sorry! Is the word of the year a new word – or is the word of the year an old word? – The word of the year is a real new word. A word we didn’t have in our language before, but which we obviously need now. – But this is not a new word. “Emergency friend”, i.e. a person with whom you have an agreement to be able to help you in a crisis situation, was mentioned several times in the Norwegian media already in 2023. Why do you choose this this year? – Because we see that now the word has started to come into more use. In addition, the word has some linguistic qualities and a topicality. LOOK HERE! THE WORD WAS ALREADY USED IN 2023. NAMELY! – Of all the words you could have chosen, why this particular word? – We believe this word sums up something that has been high up in the public discourse in the past year. And the combination of the word readiness and friend is a bit unusual. Something serious and something near and dear in the same word. – In Great Britain, the word of the year was “brain rot”, meaning that the brain rots from looking at the phone too much. Isn’t that a funnier word? – Most words are funny in their own way. We are both looking for a word that has good linguistic qualities and at the same time points to something 2024 has been about. – Which other words were candidates for “word of the year”? – Text similarity, tinderified and popcorn grass were among other things on the list. – What about exit tax? – Yes, it was also there. In addition, Norwegian tarians and hundred-day cough were on the list. – The word exit tax has been mentioned 271 times in the Norwegian media this year, shows an overview from the media database Retriever. While the word emergency friend is mentioned only 75 times. Why did you still choose standby friend? – It is not necessarily the case that it is the word that is used the most that comes highest on the list. Emergency friend is also a newer word than, for example, exit tax. GUESS WHAT WAS THE WORD OF THE YEAR IN 2020? – The Language Council is, after all, a state body. Does anyone in the state want preparedness friend to become an important word – or are you free to choose words? – Huh. We are free to choose words and make our own observations for this unceremonious selection. – How much time do you spend coming up with what will be the word of the year? – Not much time. Much of the process of finding the words is done by computers by searching the databases. Then we make a selection among those words. – Since you mention databases: In their press release it is stated that “in this process, computer tools are used which capture new words from major national and regional newspapers”. Since standby friend is not a new word, is there something wrong with the computer tool? – No, there is nothing wrong with them. And this is not a statistically based assessment either. We also look at sources other than the databases when we have to find the word. Director of the Language Council, Åse Wetås, answers our extremely “critical” questions about the word of the year. Photo: Oda Hveem – You have chosen the word of the year for many years now. Do you know anything about the meaning the choice of words can have? – We do this to draw attention to the fact that our language changes and renews itself all the time. Some of the words get more attention than others. The word to “hub” for example (which was the word of the year in 2012) has gained great importance in the language. The conversation is coming to an end. Now the director of the Language Council has a question for us: – Let me ask, do you think we have made a boring choice of words this year? – Hehe, it’s not my job to say anything about it. The language director emphasizes how much she likes the word emergency friend and continues: – There is a lot in the language that has been about war and the economy this year. So 2024 has been a new word year all the same. – Finally, Åse Wetås – and you don’t have to answer this question if you don’t want to – but do you have a standby friend? – Er, do I have it? No, I have my family and water in the garage. But this is something to think about for everyone. I’ll probably have to think about that too.
